Network attached storage

Any of you fellow geeks use a NAS device at home for data storage/backups? Picked up a new laptop today and thinking about ditching my desktop since it won't be getting much use.

Looking for around 500GB of storage and a GigE port.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be.

No recommendations for homebased gear, but PM me if you might be interested in a more "Enterprise Friendly" application . . .

Beware abtech's suggestion though...unless you have new air handlers in the budget.

Ain't that the truth. I just signed on the dotted line for another 42KW standby generator . . .

On the way to Grattan '07 - 9pm EST

"Say, what's that green glow on the horizon? You think it's aliens?"

"Nah, it's abtech's shop, he just installed a nucular reactor to run his servers"

Re: Network attached storage

Why not just get a 500GB drive that is Firewire or USB2?

Must obey the sheep dog

It's really sort of "Ultramarine", not just green . . .

Re: Network attached storage

Use the computer as a server for storage. Install your favorite Linux distro. Share a directory for storage. It is what I am doing at home. The headless computer is located in the laundry closet.

Or do as sheep suggested and get a USB drive. I like my idea better, it adds more flare.

Re: Network attached storage

I like the idea of the NAS because I can plug it into my switch and forget about it. Something like this would be pretty cool, there's just no RAID built into it.

Re: Network attached storage

I'm using this with a 350 gb drive but it advertises up to 1TB. It's only ATA but it works for what I use it for.

No matter how beautiful a woman may be, some man somewhere is sick of her sh!t.

The funny inside joke is that there is an embedded OS that runs on mid-grade EMC storage gear.

The name of the OS is... wait for it.... FLARE.
