Re: Just so everyone is clear

It is 'damper' not any of the following:

dampner
dampener
dampenerer

That is all.

Re: Just so everyone is clear

You are wrong. *

As a matter of fact, while technically correct, 'damper' drives me crazy. 'Dampener' actually describes what is happening, as in dampening chassis oscillations.

You're both wrong. It's 'Steering Stabilizer'.

Re: Just so everyone is clear

Sorry, but I'm going to be that guy...

damp-er: A device that eliminates or progressively diminishes vibrations or oscillations, as of a magnetic needle.

damp-en-er: A device that deadens, restrains, or depresses.

Both are technically correct, but the industry term is 'damper'. *But who cares anyways, damper, dampener, potAto, potato, tomAto, tomato... Say it however you like.

Re: Just so everyone is clear

Actually I read a book that specificlly stated it was damper not dampner or dampener. Just an fyi.

Of course Alan might have the best idea. Honda is calling their new gadget a steering stabilizer and doesn't scott's call theirs and steering stabilizer also?

Re: Just so everyone is clear

While we're at it:

you're = contraction of 'you are'
your = possessive

Is a paradigm worth 20 cents?

Re: Just so everyone is clear

So, what do you call those two things attached to your front wheel? Chassis stabilizers? How about the one attached to your swing arm? The same thing? Front and rear chassis stabilizers? Can't call them 'shock absorbers' because there is no such device. Maybe shock redistributor. Impact reduction device?

To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Do you mean, 'If that [is] the only thing you are going to say . . . .'

They are shock absorbers becuase they combine all of the bump absorption, both spring and dampening. *If it was just a shock or strut(no spring), damper or dampener would be correct, and the term you'd see in an engineering text on the subject. *

In my control systems classes in college the term was used interchangably, with dampener the most common usage by my professors. *Textbooks on the subject also use both terms.

TBD

I overstated a bit actually, I don't really care...
