Yeah, I promise you that the Police Dept does not endorse calling 911 for someone smoking... Im sure that Omaha has a non-emergency number to call instead of 911 for non life-threatening emergencies. Here it is a big campaign going on to try to keep the 911 lines free for people who need them.

I like the old ladies that call 911 when fluffy climbs a tree.

Yep this had me steamed this morning. Not only do I agree that the actual officers doing the work are not supportive of using 911 for this, it might cost someone thier life

But it will keep those evil devil worshipping smokers in check, so it's worth it . . .

The smoking violation would come in as a "Priority 3" call, which is low on the emergency chain. That means police officers will respond when they have time, possibly taking an hour or more. Similar calls include accidents where no one is injured.
so someone smoking in bar is on the same level as an accident? boy I'm glad I don't live out there. There's been a smoking ban in MA for years now and I can't ever recall hearing anything about calling the cops cause someone was smoking in public.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

LTL tried calling 911 just a few nights ago because we were witness to a car crash, and what do you know, 911 was busy.

don't get me started . . . I spent 25 minutes on hold waiting for 911 one evening when my neighbor took off half his right hand with his chainsaw. They finally answered while he was in surgery to put his hand back together after I drove him to the hospital (at about 140 mph). They said it was a busy night with lots of complaints about "noise violations" . . .

Contrast that with the folks that called 911 for my Mom (we were on the way to the hospital and stopped when we saw some folks) Not only did they get through Mom survived a very close and major heart attack. This was due to the boss figuring Mom needed to do a LOT of work on fixing a wayward sheep, quick action by the strangers when I hollered to call (thank you), a responsive 911, excellant and quick ambulance crew, and great work at the hospital. Some calling about a smoker would likely have resulted in her death. People that casually call 911 are either evil or totally ignorant and self absorbed.

Re: Chain gets OT in future

I have to call 911 a lot for work to ensure that telephones are routing to the correct 911 center (PSAP), and that the right numbers and addresses are showing up. I always try to call during the day during light call volume, and make the call as quick as possible to ensure the dispatchers were free. If it wasn't a legal requirement, I wouldn't do it at all.

but thats a valuable service you're providing. if the call is being sent to the wrong center its just gonna make the response time longer.

Re: Chain gets OT in future

You can get to police dispatch without using 911.. 24x7 right?
calling 911 for things like that is wrong.
