Re: PC's done CHEAP

OK, here is the deal.
As I am sure most can see from a recent post, I just got a new LCD monitor. (FINALLY)!

That said I am almost broke.
But..
I need to move up and away from my old HP p3 450mhz pc.
It can not hold more than 256megs of ram, and that truly is about its only weakness for the work I do,
IE: School work(light programming, Photoshop, HTML, and XP office stuff.

So I was going to go get a ASUS X7n8 deluxe(SP) mother board and an AMD XP2500+, and reuse my cd, and burner as well as the case, if possible.
Thing is, between those pieces and the 512 DDR ram, I will be spending about $250-300. bones, a few more then I have really.
I did see that some people(TigerDirect) have some pre-built systems,-OS for about 450-500 bucks, but they use BIOSTAR or BIOTECH mother boards.
Are there any really crappy mother boards?
I really dunno?

I also found a place selling a P3 mother board and 1 gig processor for $80.
I know that is enough for my needs, but again, I am not sure if I should stay away from any brands or not.

Any advice would be great!

Anyone know anything about these cases for 30-50 bucks(on sale), including fan(s) and pwr supply, are they worth it?

Re: PC's done CHEAP

I just built my buddy a PC..total cost was $550, speakers and all...no monitor though

I have abuddy thats got the A7N8X and he has problems with it...the board is finicky with power supplys...you have to get a real good/stable one (hes got my Enermax 431 watt one) and he still has problems.

I built several PC's with BIOSTAR boards, they are stable and cheap ($$ wise),

Its kind of hard to do it for $300.

a 1.8a is $124
512 of KingMax PC3200 DDR is $88
a case is like $40 + $15 shipping

Theres $250 and you still have to get the board.

gonna reuse the hard drive you have now?,

Some of the older HP's machines didnt use standard connection/wiring on them..plug them into a standard board and it'll blow it out...hence a new case...
RaidMax cases are pretty good, the power supplies are decent as well.

I get most of my parts from Newegg.com, they have free shipping on almost all the items, except cases...

Re: PC's done CHEAP

Jay, I have dealt with Tiger Direct twice, buying 2 computers from them. I had motherboard problems on the second one, and they bent over backwards (next day shipping) to correct the problem. Finally sent me a new computer when the prob was not resolved. That said, the first comp I ever mail ordered was through ABS Computers (Technology). My current computer is an AMD based system from ABS, and is awesome. The cool thing about ABS is that they will basically let you order a custom machine, much like Dell, only a hell of a lot cheaper. Decent warranty, don't know that much about tech support, as I've never had to use it. PM me if you want more details.

I realize that you're talking about building your own, but take a look at ABS while you're at it

Re: PC's done CHEAP

Jay,

I WAS a big fan of the nforce2 chipset until I got fed up with M$ and those dam patches. I fought with redhat on the A7n8x delux and gave up on the extras. I disabled the onboard realtec lan and the audio.

by the way I ran a delux board on a 250watt PSU. Lucky? your results may vary. I know its cutting it close.

You know what.. A deal from a .org to a .org guy.... I have a bunch of MSI boards that will only take a xp1900 palomino and need DDR. Price you you and anyone else here $20+shipping. Just the board. I dont know if I have any left with raid.

here is a brief on the board linky

Re: PC's done CHEAP

A7N8X is a troublesome board. I'd stay away. If you must go Asus, go with an A7V8X. Truthfully, I'd recommend you go to a Gigabyte board. Something like a GA7VAXP, they are absolutely fantastic with the XP processors. And they also come with a Dual Bios, something which nobody else has(that I'm aware of.

Hope this helps.

PS. Get your ram from Crucial.com, you won't regret it

Re: PC's done CHEAP

Hey guys thanks, that is something to chew on that is for sure.

I am going to be reusing the h.drive, at least for a few months.

I just saw that I can not reuse my hp case, connections are fine but power supply is only 160watts.
Humm? And I wondered why my pc locks up when running both cd-rom and burner, which are both factory installs mind you. I hardly think that is enough power to support anything though.

Tomb, I will keep that offer in mind.
Let me take a look around really quick.

Thanks, jay

Re: PC's done CHEAP

I'm not a computer expert by any means, but I have been shopping everywhere I could find for a new pc. This place has the best prices I could find anywhere for complete systems.

Cyberpower

They use all top name stuff, and beat all other retailers I could find by about $200. Check them out.

Re: PC's done CHEAP

Wow, so many choices, to hard to even think.

Both the place that pczach recommended and TigerDirect have the BEST DEALS.
At least from what I can gather and if you are looking into barebones kits.

They are only about $150. more than a motherboard and chipset yet come with a 80-100gig west.dig hd, case and at least 256 DDR 3200 ram.

Humm? Again, so many choices!

Re: PC's done CHEAP

Jay,
If you have a Fry's electronics near you they have an AMD 2200+ processor with ECS K7VTA3 motherboard for $79.99 (at least here is Austin, TX). The computer I currently have that I built has an ECS motherboard and I have not had any issues with it.

Also, as stated before Newegg.com is great. That is where I bought most of the components for my computer.

Good Luck!

Re: PC's done CHEAP

OK, Another Question.
Is it worth spending the extra 50-60 bucks to get the 512 l2 cache?

Instead of 256?
