Dog Problem

Hey all!
I hope your having a better Day than I am.
I adopted a wonderful Choclote Lab from my local shelter about a week ago, and today I found out the old owners want him back.
They never called or even checked at the shelter and he was there for 20 days! though on their defence its an hour from there home.
But the problem is I love the dog, and so does my wife and so does our other dog! and on top of all that we have spent about $450 in vet expenses and dog stuff!
I don't want to give him up and legaly I don't have to, But I know how pissed I would be if the situation was reversed. Though I woulod have called every shelter in the State!
I just don't know what to do. Any Ideas? Comments?

Re: Dog Problem

From Indiana also.

Wow, that is a tough call. How old is the dog?

As much as it sucks, I'd be inclined to get them the dog back. I would certainly ask for reimbursement on at least part of the bills however.

Re: Dog Problem

Just my 2 cents, but I'd give him back. You've had him a week, they had him 3 years or so. If they didn't care about him they wouldn't have attempted to make contact.

Just my opinion though which sometimes around here doesn't always count for much, ask anyone.

Re: Dog Problem

The other concern I had, that I should have mentioned sooner, is that the dog was taken to the shelter by a neighbor whos dogs had been fought with and others impregnated by the dog. He ran free, and I am afraid that I would just be putting the dog back into that same situation and this time the neighbor might just decide to perminatly solve the problem.
I do appreciatet the input, it can be hard to think clearly about this kind of stuff

Re: Dog Problem

I would suggest making the previous owners foot the vet bill. My reasoning is as follows: it's a steep bill, but if I had lost my dog and found him again, I would pay it happily to have him back. If they are truly committed they will pay, you're not out anything but heartache, and all is right with the world. If they aren't fully committed, that sort of outlay may make them fully committed and make the dog's life in their care better. And of course, if they really aren't into it (i.e. didn't really look and just so happened to find out etc...) then the dog is in better hands.

Good luck, and post up how it turns out.

Oh yeah, and

Re: Dog Problem

Sounds like a no win situation. If you keep him, you know you'll always feel guilty about it.

You have to figure there's always 2 sides to every story too. You never know what that neighbor's true intentions were. And why would the neighbor take the dog to a shelter an hour away? Gotta be more to that story.

Re: Dog Problem

i would keep it. you have already begun to bond with the dog, and spent the money. my dog got out on new years eve. i called every shelter in our county within the next twenty four hours, checked all the websites, called the sherriff and p.d., and also posted on craigslist. i had her back in three days. if they really cared they would have tried harder. screw em.

Re: Dog Problem

I would scour the earth for my dog if she were lost and wouldn't give up until she was home or I found the body. Perhaps these people have too been looking for their dog (and magically don't own a phone book with surrounding shelters #s in it....). I would give them the chance to foot the bills and take the dog back, there would be no amount of money that would keep me from mine and I would have to assume anyone who really loves their dog would feel the same.

I wouldnt give him up, especially if i have spent that much on the dog already. If they really wanted the dog then they would have been calling all over the place and posting flyers for the dog. I mean think about it, 20 days! They didnt want him that bad at all. Maybe they found out that the shots are ow current from a vet and they dont have to pay for shyt. If you do give him back, then they should reimburse you for all of your troubles.

Re: Dog Problem

honestly I wouldn't give him up, from what it sounds like you pulled him out of a situation that could have gotten pretty bad, on top of that he seems to be happy with his new family, so keep him
