Re: Interesting night....

Last week I got a call from this guy I used to lifeguard with. Pretty cool kid, haven't talked to him in a while. So we shoot the breeze for a while and it turns out that every Tuesday night is hangout night at his house. Me and another buddy went over his house tonight. We walk in the house, we're talking, he's kinda showing us around a bit since I've never been there before and then shortly thereafter he's like....here come in the back yard, check out my pet leopard. I'm like did you just say leoapard? He said yep, we got a pet leopard. So we go back there, and sure enough, it's in a biiiiiig freaking cage. All I gotta say is wow, I never knew you were allowed to own one of those.

Are you sure it's legal?

Re: Interesting night....

I doubt if you are, unless you have some sort of reallllllly hard to obtain permit. Why on earth does he have it - status? . Like the Siegfried and Roy thing, that animal does not belong in a friggin' cage!

Re: Interesting night....

Yeah, I asked, he said they're federally regulated, and they have a special permit for it. Technically it's not theirs, they're taking care of it for one of his dad's(dad's a doctor) patients indefinitely.

Re: Interesting night....

According to this week's Time magazine, there are as many as 10,000 wild felines (tigers, lions, etc.) in private hands in the U.S. *Ohio is one of 16 states that has virtually no regulation against it...

edit: Same article states that no federal law prevents you from having them. You do need a permit from the U.S.D.A if you plan on displaying it.

Re: Interesting night....

That's one of the things in life the pisses me off. There is absolutely no need in life to have one of those or any type of wild animal.

Re: Interesting night....

When I lived in PA, a person in the neighborhood had tigers. There should be some town laws about having those wild creatures. Once a tiger got loose.....that was the end of those folks being able to keep them.

I wonder if the town knows the leopards are there. There have to be local laws too that regulate the possession of wild animals even if they are 'temporarily indefinitely' being babysat.

Re: Interesting night....

Don't want to jack this thread, but seems like a good place to put an animal story...

A friend of mine used to keep snakes...boas, pythons, and a few exotic smaller snakes. Anyway, he belonged to some herpetological (sp?) society that constantly stressed the responsible ownership of some of these dangerous reptiles, and they would include in their newsletter stories of reptile ownership gone bad.

One story was of a fellow who illegally kept a giant monitor lizard chained to a post in his backyard. None of his neighbors knew it was there, except the pitbull in an adjacent yard (see where this is going?). At some point the pitbull dug a tunnel under the fence. The dog's owner ran outside to investigate the yelps of his dog and peered over the fence to see this giant lizard holding his dog in its mouth and beating it to death against the fence...which is apparently how lizards kill live prey before swallowing it.
