Not My Plasma TV

It was reported on the Australian news today that they are trying to get Plasma TV's taken off the market here in Australia within 1 year due to the amount energy they consume. They did not mention any alternative, they claimed the LCD will suffer the same fate within 4 years. Already here in Queensland they have put a bounty on the light bulb which not be sold inside of the next 12 months... fluorescent light will be the only option.

Re: Not My Plasma TV

Thats rediculous, if the energy consumption was that high people wouldn't buy them.

I am all for fluorescent light bulbs though. They are extremely efficient compared with traditional globes. If everyone changed to fluorescent it would make a huge difference in overall power consumption. The fluorescent technology is only getting better and better.

Better not tell "whychooseplasma.com"
Thats Panasonics push for their plasmas.

Realistically they dont use that much power, certainly not compared to many other things like running a heat or air conditioner.

What I wished they had banned was the first generation plasma and lcd that had resolutions of 640x480 - thats less than standard definition tv. Instead of saying "high def ready" they should have been labelled "low definition". Bloody US hand me down junk!

Yes I think it might just be media hype, imagine all those people on 25 years interest free deals or whatever with Harvey Norman who won't get to own there TV before it's discontinued... ouch

Re: Not My Plasma TV

And they are only talking about removing them from the market, not banning existing ones.
Basically the idea is to put a star rating on them and then ban the ones that dont meet the min star rating.

I think the star rating is a good idea to make consumers aware.

actually, they were more like 852x480(p). i don't remember any 640s. i had one of the first pannys, and it was beautiful even for today's standards. it closely matched dvd res, and nobody was either broadcasting in true hi-def or sitting that close to notice a difference.

so, blame japan or better yet, canada for whatever you got down undah.
