How do lemon laws work in the US?

Channel 9 ran a story here in Australia about cars that are sold new and turn out to be "lemons" or "duds". In the story they reported that the US has "lemon laws" to protect consumers. We don't have such protection here. How does this law work in the US?

I pretty sure it varies from state to state... Might be a federal lemon law that states have adopted, but im pretty sure the lemon laws vary on the state level as well.. The state lemon laws go into more detail..

The federal lemon law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) protects citizens of all states. State lemon laws vary by state and may not necessarily cover used or leased cars. The rights afforded to consumers by lemon laws may exceed the warranties expressed in purchase contracts. Lemon law is the common nickname for these laws, but each state has different names for the laws and acts. In California, lemon laws cover anything mechanical, as do the federal lemon laws. The federal lemon law also provides that the warranter may be obligated to pay your attorney fees if you prevail in a lemon law suit, as do most state lemon laws.

They vary slightly state to state but the basics are that if your car has a defect that can not be repaired fully in three tries within 12-18 months or 12000-18000 miles (that's the main part that varies state to state), then the car is deemed a lemon and must be bought back from the consumer.

My understanding is that it is money back or replacement? I wonder what happens in practice?

Depends on how good your attorney is.
It should be a full replacement. Either a new car (if you're willing to take another one), or what you paid for the car.

One would hope if it's law then an attorney should not be called into play.
