knee surgery

Since we, riders, have more metals and artificial limbs than any other group of people, I was wondering if anyone here had any kind of knee surgery done.

As my ID may have revealed to some of you, I am a long time Taekwondo (that's a korean martial arts) practioner, and I injured my knee about 5 years ago in a tournament. I partially tore my left ACL and damaged my miniscus. Although my knee never felt the same, and it would buckle once in a while during practice, my doctor never thought it was severe enough for a surgery. He basically just told me to stop doing martial arts.

Well, kicking and getting kicked is one of my favorite passtime, so I never stopped. And 2 days ago, I really really twisted the same knee pretty badly. It was making all kinds of cruching noise, and I can't even straighten it out right now. I am on my way to a specialist with MRI and all that.

I've not heard of a good story about reconstructive knee surgery, but I know professionals get them done a lot. I have seen many compete after a surgery. But I guess they spend millions to fix their knee too. I can't do that.

In any case, I really want to be kicking (and get kicked) again. I want to be able to practice the art to some level until I can't walk.

So, is there anyone that has any relevent experience or advise to share?

Re: knee surgery

I'm going through exactly the same problem with my right shoulder - I hurt it in the middle of 06 and I just went to the doc yesterday to ask about surgery. I can't put up with it any longer, what I think is that they have become much better at this type of stuff recently. Slickwill might have some ideas. I hate the idea of the recovery time..

Re: knee surgery

I have been taking Tae Kwon Do since grade school.. And from my past experiences it is great for your joints... Not sure if you have a partially torn ACL.. I hope it gets better.. Your probally will need surgery but don't worry, now a days people recover extremely fast and can't even tell... Good luck...

Re: knee surgery

I tore my ACL or MCL or both (not sure..dont really remember, the pain killers were good) when I was 16. I had to go in for the surgery a few days after it happened and it was an orthoscopic kind of deal in at 7 am and i was home by supper time in a giant leg immobilizer from foot to pelvis. Kept that one for awhile and then started physio for awhile and that vared from lifting weights by doing toe raises to liftin weights with my leg to box squats. Shitty ordeal but it feels great now. I partake in mixed martial arts specializing in sport kickboxing and traditional jiu-jitsu and I rarely ever have an issue with my knee. Although it does get a little sore quicker then any other joint but apparently it's due to the fact that the muscles in my left leg are still smaller then my right due to the tear.

Re: knee surgery

I tore my ACL about 4 years ago, come to think of it, this New Years will be 4 years to the date, because I had my surgery on New Years EVE. Anyway I got my ACL from a cadaver, surgery was quick in and out same day.... next day started therapy.( OUCH!! ) No problem since then.... I play indoor vollyball and have to wear a brace.... once in a while she swells up but not to bad. ( considering I weigh 235 ). I wouldn't worry about getting surgery ,if you're in shape.. you should bounce back with no problem. Just take it slow the first year with your martial arts .

Re: knee surgery

So I got my surgery yesterday. My ACL was fully torn and was loose, and the minicus was complete torn, and stuck between the bones. So the doctor took a portion of the ligament behind the knee and replaced the torn ACL, and put the cartilege back into the place. The doctor also found that I had a bad case of arthritis behind the knee cap, most likely due to continued abuse since my initial injury 5 years ago. It is hurting pretty badly right now, luckly I can work from home, so things aren't going to be too bad. I am wondering though, if this would be the end of my Taekwondo career. I gotta move on to perhaps something that isn't too stressful for the knee. Oh well...

Re: knee surgery

I had knee surgery in the Army about 4 years ago and my knee is still not the same and not much better. I hope that doesn't discourage you. It was not for an HCL but to correct running up and down mountains with a ruck sack on with Osgood Schlatters disease in my knee.

For an LCL, no walking for nearly three months, then 25% of you weight for a few weeks, the 50% for a few weeks and then you can go full weight. You are looking at close to 3 months before you can walk normally. I spent 6 months in PT.
