I think Americans would react badly to this

Our new leader Kevin Rudd has announced plans to censor the internet at ISP level, I'm not so sure this will even get off the ground but to me this is plain scary. Australia is not China and what we don't need is the govt deciding for us what we see when we go searching the web. I for one don't care how they spin it to the Australian public its a dangerous path to travel down. If kids want to find explicit content of any kind then no amount of filters will stop them, that job is up to the parents and the govt has no busiiness trying to get involved. Where do they stop with this policy once they start?? This would never fly in the USA I bet, it's not workable.

Re: I think Americans would react badly to this

indeed, we value our first amendment (free speech) too much.

although, our patriot act allows the government to monitor our traffic.

that's really draconian. sounds like parents are looking to be exculpated from actual parenting.

Re: I think Americans would react badly to this

There was talk of moving all porn to it's own ".xxx" domain. This would be a much better tactic, it would allow individuals to block access as opposed to some other entity (gov't, ISP, whatever) deciding what the public could or couldn't view. If the gov't could prevent people from viewing porn, who's to say they couldn't restrict any other info they deem to keep from the people? This is the first step down a treacherous slope.

good quote. here's another:

"I'd rather let a thousand guilty men go free than chase after them."

it's either thomas jefferson or chief wiggum...i can't remember which.

Mate this is exactly the point. It's not the goverments job at all, and it's not just the adult stuff, it's violence and whatever else. Loads of kids have TV's in their bedrooms so are they going to stop violence on TV? I don't think so. The way I understand it they want to build a blacklist of sites, a pretty unworkable plan I would say. And does this mean Youtube will be banned in Australia? All this from our new idiot prime minister who himself was busted eating his own ear wax in parliment (maybe that is why he's going after youtube) and who got called out for being in a New York strip club on tax payers money. When the country considers Julia Gillard a s#x symbol you know the men do need a good dose of p#rn. For those of you who don't know what she looks like picture a Raptor with lipstick and your getting close.
