Re: diamonds  the real story

You know what's weird? I did a bunch of reading today on diamonds, most of it on howstuffworks.com. Strange koinkydink...

Re: diamonds  the real story

Ya know, I was gonna post something about De Beers a while back when, I think, ER was shopping for a ring for his fiance'. But at the time, it seemed sorta out of place, so I didn't.

However, I remember some years ago seeing a TV prog on the De Beers group, and how they perpetuated the 'rarity' and 'value' of diamonds. In fact, diamonds are quite common and and the De Beers monopoly has done a fine job indeed of keeping their price up. Capitalism at its best!!

No offense ER, if in fact I am alluding to the correct .org member. Diamonds are still 'a girl's best friend' and there is nothing wrong with that. They should just be a lot less expensive.

Re: diamonds  the real story

John Stossel (sp?) did a report while back on that TV news magazine 20/20 - he basically showed the diamond market for the scam that it is. He still hasn't bought his wife a diamond and no matter how much information he shows his wife about the diamond industry, she (and I suspect most other women) doesn't give a rat's arse and still wants a rock anyway because it's a generally accepted way of validating a husband's affection for his wife. Cultural habits are hard to break.

Try telling someone milk isn't the wholesome product the dairy industry wants you to believe it is and they'll look at you like your some kind of communal nut

I say if your wife wants a diamond, try to talk her into CZ and invest the rest in a college fund for your kids.

Re: diamonds  the real story

Nothing new to me. You should also know that DeBeers hires mercs to kill villages in South Africa to take over a mine. *I haven't read up on it in a while, but the majority of the diamonds imported into the states had 'bloodshed' on them. *I will never buy one.

Re: diamonds  the real story

Interesting read. Last I spoke with my jeweler, he mentioned that there were some synthetic diamonds that were being made that could hardly be distinguishable from natural diamonds. I haven't seen any yet.

I have some rings with diamonds, sapphires & emeralds...I hardly wear them because I don't want to scratch or nick them.

Heck, I'd be happy to wear a synthetic gem that looks real. Then the extra $$ could be used for something useful.

I'd be more apt to wearing a gem that I wouldn't worry about getting nicked up or scratched because they eventually do get that way.

Re: diamonds  the real story

Two words: HELL YEAH!
American capitalism at it's finest. The quote from the general that started Gemesis is great. You can actually feel DeBeers' fear of these stones in this article.
The last page mentions the name of a jeweler in southern Utah. I think I'll contact him and see if/when he's getting these stones. I'd much rather buy an American made stone with no history of blood and cartel control from some other country - regardless of whether the cartel deems it to be 'real'.
It's a damned stone. Whether it came out of the ground or was grown in a lab they have the same chemical makeup and are just stones.
The people quoted in the story are right. Nobody gives a [email protected] whether the stone came fron DeBeers or not.
In fact, if these companies were to push the history of DeBeers in their advertising they would outsell DeBeers diamonds two to one.

Re: diamonds  the real story

I've been doing research on this for a while as I work in the semiconductor industry. *These 'synthetic' diamonds are coming. *Most of the people working on the technology plan to fund the research with gems, but think they'll get rich in the semiconductor industry. *And they're probably right. *I actually have a patent pending that specifically mentions using diamond.

Diamonds feel cold to the touch because of their amazing thermal conductivity, about 3 times better than copper.
