Re: no more STATIC!

i live just close enough to several markets so that i can barely pick up the types of programming i like (talk, sports, etc). *barely means they fade in and out with a bunch-o-static.*NO MORE *i finished the install of an *XM Radio in my truck today. *so far ... i like !

i purchased the Delphi SKYFi radio with the vehicle adapter kit. *out of the box it works through a cassette adapter and i knew i wouldnt be satisfied with the clickity, clickity, clickity sounds it makes ALL the time. *before i even received my radio, i ordered an FM Modulator & Glass-Mount Antenna. --- why cant it ever be easy?? --- i researched my options over the weekend and discovered that there is an adapter that plugs into my OEM radio (where the CD changer would go) and it gives me RCA inputs. *a visit to radio shack for a cable and all of the parts were in order. *once i received my SKYFi i found that the antenna that was enroute would not plug into the vehicle adapter. *i just had to figure out a way to use the standard magnetic mount included with the kit.

while waiting for the adapter to arrive, i mounted the SKYFi where i THOUGHT i wanted it --- still not that easy!! --- as you will see in the pix, i couldnt see entire display with my truck in drive . *i have plenty of aluminum sheeting left (like i used for my laptimer mount), so i cranked out another bracket - re-positioned the SKYFi - hooked up the new cabling & adapter - now i'm set and am very happy with the static free radio *

pix...
initial mounting point
eh, i can still see most of the display!
DOH!
bracket solution
vehicle adapter mount on the bracket
holes for bracket placement & cable routing
bracket mounted in dash cubby
vehicle adapter in place
SKYFi in adapter
back in the truck ... finally
cables nice & neat
micro antenna routed through 3rd brake lite

let me say that all my accessories were ordered from XMFanStore.com. *they have been VERY easy to deal with. *they took back the items i didnt want without question and they ship stuff out very quick!!

Very nice setup. Seems like you did a lot of work, but the end result looks pimptastic

Re: no more STATIC!

Call me dumb, but are you using a casette adapter to feed the XM radio thingy to your car speakers?

Aren't you switching the digital signal w/ xm (is it even digital?) to analog?

I say this, b/c I have a rome mp3 player

and it makes my digital mp3s sound totally terrible.

Anyway, it's still a cool set up, even if I'm wrong about what you're showing.

Be fast or be last.

Re: no more STATIC!

Flasher, when I installed my XM Delphi in my truck, I didn't have any problems. *

I can't listen to regular radio anymore.

Nice install, btw. XMFan is a very informative website.

Re: no more STATIC!

My truck's radio has XM built right in. I have the 'service', but rarely (meaning probably a total of 45 minutes in the 8 months I've had it) listen to it.
I can see how it would be great for those that live in areas with weak signal or for road trips where radio signal goes away, but it's not for me.

On radios where you need the external adapter, the signal goes through an unused FM frequency - typically 89.1, not through a cassette-type adapter.

Re: no more STATIC!

What year is your Dodge? That at least an 02 Dash if I'm not mistaken. Satellite radio signal is only didgital to the receiver and from there it becomes analog. Your best option is definitely direct audio, next would be a cassette adapter and I never recommend FM modulators. FM has the worst frequency response and signal level of the available options. I usually use the Soundgate interfaces for Aux/Satellite/Bose applications.

Looks good BTW.

no, you're not dumb (my post was probably hard to follow), and no, i'm not using the cassette.

the vehicle kit comes standard with the cassette adapter. *i tossed it and now stay digitalesque with the PIE adapter. *i simply hit the MODE button on my headunit until it switches to what it thinks is the CD Changer, then i'm there.

thanx, i needed that *

thank you, bill, my truck is an '03

Re: no more STATIC!

I was curious about the year because I know Diamler Chrysler has a direct plug in Sirius receiver, but I'm pretty sure it only works on 04 models.

Re: no more STATIC!

I ran my antenna the same way flasher. Works great. Only had a loss of signal in some canyons last weekend MILES from anywhere.

Re: no more STATIC!

Good choice with the PIE adapter, Flasher. I read it's supposed to be much better than the Soundgate. I don't have a PIE because they don't make one for my stereo unit so I'm using an FM modulator and it works well enough for me.

Sooooo, when are you going to hook it up to your bike?

There are only two birds one east and one west. I was up in Arkansas going due south on Scenic byway 7 with hillsides close in on both sides. Lost the signal for 2 minutes out of a 6 hour trip. Not bad...

Re: no more STATIC!

Looks good, Flasher! I have one installed in my truck, too, using an FM modulator. I just stuck a bracket down near the floor to simplify the installation. I don't really need to see the screen and I can use the remote to change channels.

I also have a cradle hooked up to my bike (via the Autocom)so I can listen on the bike, too! Got a few little bugs to work out (the wires jiggle loose). I think some foam and electrical tape will solve that.
