Dealing with telemarketers..

This stems from the gas prices thread and I feel it warrants it's own place on the site. How do you like to deal with telemarketers, do you listen to the sales pitch and then go to work on them? Do you hang up? Lots of times these calls come from 3rd world sweat shops so you have to feel for these people who have often been trained not to take no for an answer. Last week I had a guy trying to sell me oil contracts out of Europe, idiot. He was hell bent on selling me on what he could see in his crystal ball (yeah right), even after I told him my own family was in the oil business he wouldn't let up or listen.. (its not BTW)so I gave him a good dose of heavy metal hold music blasting out of my PC speakers (thanks youtube) after 4 of my favourite thrash metal songs I checked my phone and by magic he was gone... I've found this technique quite effective, I don't hang up I just find a good podcast or something on the net and place my phone in front of it and do checks at 5 minute intervals. Wasting their time seems to stop them calling back, I don't get so many cold calls these days..

Re: Dealing with telemarketers..

An older family friend (60+ years old now) has a really squeaky cartoon voice. When telemarketers call, she immediately cuts them off and says "sowwy my mommy isnt home now" sometimes they ask when her mommy will be back in and she'll just say she doesnt know.

I've personally:
1. said no thank you and politely ended the call
2. just plain hung up
3. when bored, asked them to repeat themselves... repeatedly.
4. when really bored (once at work) rebutted with a totally random sales pitch myself, incorporating the same "take no for an answer" tactic

good times

Re: Dealing with telemarketers..

At work, I'll tell the person to hold on while I check if "the manager is in the mood to take a sales call" and leave them on hold. Indefinitely. Well, normally indefinitely. Sometimes, I'll check back after a few minutes and tell them to hold on again, then place them on hold again. One time I kept a guy on hold for over an hour. That was a good day.

Re: Dealing with telemarketers..

Just ask them for thier home phone number and tell them you will call them back later to talk about what they are selling.

Or this will work: YouTube - Prank Call - Telemarketer Calls Murder Scene

Re: Dealing with telemarketers..

I once was getting about 12 calls from a company a day. I made it end real quick; inserted ear plugs and got the air horn. I only got three more call before I wasn't called anymore. And I always asked to be put on the do not call list, so I didn't feel bad about doing the air horn.

Re: Dealing with telemarketers..

The dog whistle and a small can of compressed air works good on the annoying dogs around the nieghberhood too. Get a tube to connect the tank and the whistle crack it and bammo. They can't figure out what the hell is wrong with thier pooch and why it won't shut up.
