I got done like that in 2004. Had 60 quid fine and a couple of points. I was doing 81 I think on a 70mph dual carriageway. Raglan bypass.

Brilliant.... not for getting the ticket but because of this...

They are not allowed to 'hide'. They have to be in plain sight on the side of the road.. you can argue the ticket on that

Make sure to ask for a copy of the calibration certificate for the device for that day, plus also proof that a 'test' vehicle was driven past at 40mph to check the correct calibration of the device. They have to do that, its in the guidelines..

Try to find out what device was used by them.. as there are doubts about the accuracy of some of them due to possible radio interference..

This is the Guidelines for use book, as published by the Association Of Police Officers - Link

They would have been in plain sight to someone coming the other way on the carriage way.. but NOT from your direction..

THe "how to book" says this about checking vehicles going in both directions, which presumably it was doing if it was on the other side of the dual carriageway from you
Quote:
Roadside/vehicle mounted laser/optical meters currently are designed to record vehicles travelling in one direction at a time. Where a device has a switch enabling vehicle speeds to be measured in both directions (either individually or simultaneously) it is important to site the device correctly and in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Where there is a camera attachment it should be correctly aligned.

Re: Would like any tips or tricks to get out of this damn speeding ticket!!

Thanks loopy lee, thats a lot of info to digest!

With regards the calibration the FAQ sheet that comes with explains all about the calibration procedures and each device has a built in self diagnostic check so don't think i can go down that route. The van itself was actually in a layby come to think of it, there are bushes around it but i don;t think i'd get away with that one either...

They HAVE to calibrate the device everytime they set it up to use it and you are quite within your rights to ask for proof that it was done as they have to keep a record that they did it..

This makes me soooo

Quote:
A million more speeding tickets are being issued every year than a decade ago, the Tories said, raising 100m a year in fines.Sadly this is just as money making scheme where we the public are the main sufferes. As if the recession and the the price of fuel wasn't enought o worry about.

The shadow police reform minister, said official figures showed 1,773,412 fixed penalty notices were given to drivers in 2006, up from 712,753 in 1997.

These were for motorists caught on camera as well as those stopped by the police.

Ruffley said: "Ministers need to tell us what they are doing with this 100m a year taken from motorists. How much is actually put back into practical road safety that does not involve speed cameras?

Yep.. agree with you there but there are guidelines they have to follow when using speed cameras. Most people arn't aware of them and just pay up and get points on their licences..

It's a licence to print money for the Government and in all honesty have the accident rates been cut with all the speed cameras about everywhere we go?

Re: Would like any tips or tricks to get out of this damn speeding ticket!!

Totally agree! Apparently there was a documentary about how speed cameras cause more accidents than they prevent & was to be screened on the BBC, but was pulled at the last minute by the government as a public demand for an enquiry would have duly followed - which lets face it wouldn't have been good for the coffers!
