Re: Credit Report Info

I received the following email and called the number, but hung up when the recording started asking for personal info (social security number, etc). If this is legit, I want to opt out. I get enough garbage in the mail and enough calls from telemarketers without the credit agencies passing my info out. Does anybody know anything about this? Here is a copy of the email that I received:

subject: YOUR CREDIT REPORT GOES PUBLIC IN JULY! REMOVE YOUR NAME ASAP!
Your Credit: Personal Information goes public Starting July 1st, 2003, the four major credit bureaus in the US (Equifax, etc.) will be allowed to release credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to ANYONE who requests it. If you do not want to be included in this release of your personal information, you can call 1-888-567-8688. Once the message starts you will want option #2 (even though option #1 refers to this email, push #2) and then option #3.
Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two-year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option, which opts you out FOREVER. You should receive their paperwork in the mail confirming the 'opting out' in less than one week after making the call.

PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

Re: Credit Report Info

the rule of thumb is unless YOU initiate the call dont ever give your info out....this smells fishy. I would not do it.

Re: Credit Report Info

Very interesting. *I read your link Alexandra and kinda feel dumb doing this about 3 months ago. *I received a letter from the Opt-Out Department (SeatlleWA), and I thought I was requesting not to have my personal information disclosed through Equifax, Experian, Innovis or Trans Union. *After reading the letter, it states that my request to be removed from pre-approved credit grantors mailing lists has been processed. *Basically just stating I will no longer receive pre-approved credit applications from companies gathering my personal information from the above agencies, but cannot guarantee other publishers not using the above credit agencies. *Nothing else mentioned as to general blocking of junk mail and telemarketing a**holes, which was what I thought I was accomplishing.

I'm still not sure how big of a scam this might be, but I fell for it. Damn Co-Workers!!!!

Re: Credit Report Info

I opted out when I got a copy of my credit report from Equifax. The proper contact info is listed on your credit report. That's the only way it should be done to make sure it's legit.

A lady at work got the same email and asked me to check it out (I am the department Hoax checker). Since I was at work I decided to call that number just to see what it was. It rang picked up and there was silence, so I hung up. My phone was dead for 10 minutes after this. Of course I freaked out but everything was fine after that.

I always research unsolicited emails like that.

Re: Credit Report Info
