Well reaserched Bacchus, those are two excellent links! The funny thing about the two different spreads is that an Aussie will eat marmite and will just say it isnt queit as good! where as a Pommie will nearly flat out refuse to eat Vegimite and claim that it is digusting!

I think it's mainly a Southern (US) tradition. Black-eyed peas for luck and cabbage or turnip greens for prosperity....and cornbread 'cause it's good.
