Need a Small server

I want to get a small, cheap server for the workplace. It will be having 4 computers on it and would like it to do backup on a removable media nightly. What do you guys recommend for servers? Raid is to expensive to justify the the use. It will be running small programs, nothing graphic intesnsive. it would be like a server in a high school pretty much.

Re: Need a Small server

Is it just for file storage purposes or will it actually run any applications such as a mail/webserver? What kind of expansion are you looking at in the next 2-3years?

If it's for basic data storage and nothing else, just build a strong desktop PC with 2gigs of RAM a big hard drive and put a DVD burner in it.

I need a small female server too...approx 5' 5" tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, pleasant disposition, nice figure and willing to please (and serve).

Sorry, I just had to say that.

Bikes and women - both have nice curves.

I'm sure you can get an old PII or PIII to handle those small tasks. Lots of 2nd hand places around, so you can put it together cheap. Just don't skimp on the important components.

Bikes and women - both have nice curves.

If the programs are so small is there a partuicular reason you want them to run from the server. In some cases you may cause more network traffic meaning slower internet connections.

Re: Need a Small server

2 of the wont be hooked to internet. I would also like to setup a VPN too. not sure what that all entails but have been looking into it. I would like to run from a server for backup purposes and main shared drives.

Only reason you would need a VPN is if one of those 4 users needed to access network resources from the outside

Even then it might be overkill for personal files!! Could use terminal server, PC Anywhere, etc.

To your server from their home?

VPN isn't the best choice, as all info must travel over the tunnel, as opposed to RDP or pcAw which exchanges screens and keystrokes primarily. A program load of Word 2003 over a T1 vpn without any other traffic is over one and a half minutes. The same app over the same link on RDP takes the time it takes to load on the remote screen (~ 15 seconds) plus about 2% for overhead and latency.
