Selling my girls diamond ring.. Someone trying to scam?

I am selling my girlfriends diamond ring (with her blessing, I may add) on ebay, and was just wondering if anyone knows of any scams with paypal?

I have a potential buyer, however, I am kind of worried, as the guy doesn't seem to know how to end an auction with "buy it now"...

he tells me to end the auction so he can send me the cash (he originally wanted to pay with visa, but I told him paypal only - to which he agreed)

Anyway, the thing that has me worried is that the guy doesn't seem to want to end the auction himself buy "buying it now", he asked me to end it, and send him my paypal id so he can transfer cash. Does anyone know of any paypal scams? Of course, I'd never send my password, only the actual ID itself, but I'm worried there is a scam I don't know about. Of course, could just be the guy is new to ebay and has no idea...

Anyone?

I don't really want to post the email, as it would take up a LOT of space..

Sounds like he just doesn't get it. By ending the auction early and conducting the transaction outside of ebay, you would avoid paying the value fee and would not have access to his feedback in the event of a dispute. Same for him, he would not have access to your feedback to hold over your head if the transaction goes sour. Being the seller, you are in a less vulnerable position than he since you don't have to send the item until you can verify funds. I would go ahead and end the auction and complete the transaction.

It still amazes me how many people don't understand ebay.

The only thing scam I can think of would be where he is pays you with a stolen credit card (over paypal). If the true card owners find out and notify paypal, you would probably be SOL.

This is actually the thing that worries me. The guy is an unverified paypal user. I have the "it's fishy feeling" and he seems to want the ring REAL fast. Wifes B'day. I don't doubt him, but I am worried about a stolen card. I will ask him to verify his paypal account, if he can do that, I guess it's as safe as I can play it. Seeing as it's my GF's ring, I don't want to risk it...

If he offered to pay with the his credit card maybe you can call his credit card company and have them verify that the card is not stolen (they can call the owner to verify).

Find out if he is paying by credit card. If so, get his account number, the security number on the back (its onthe back of Visa and MC on the signiature line, 7 digets like this: xxxx xxx) his name, and address. Call the card company and verify the name and address. Or make him send a Cashiers check from his bank (not a liquor store).

Don't do it. Unverified Paypal users can be a nightmare. Do not ship anything to an unverified shipping address either. A person can claim that they never recieved the item and YOU are the one held responsible.

Cashiers checks can be forged. Ask Stegen.

Re: Selling my girls diamond ring.. Someone trying to scam?

I was sort of hoping that when a paypal payment goes through, it is "safe" - ie - the funds have cleared, and if it was an illegitimate transaction, then the CC company would persue the scammer - but alas, no, as usual, it's easier to go after the person that was scammed than the one doing the scamming..

Re: Selling my girls diamond ring.. Someone trying to scam?

Actually it is against Ebays rules to end an auction and then sell the item outside of Ebay. Ebay wants you to report anyone who offers to purchase the item outside the auction. And you could get in trouble for doing it. If he wants it then he will have to wait. Plus you may make more money by riding it out.

I had someone offer to buy the ZX12 outside the auction.

Something definitely doesn't seem kosher. If he's not following the rules and asking you to break them for him, don't give in no matter what excuse he's giving you. Don't do this guy any favors...his problem is his problem, don't get yourself into a situation. Now's not the time to be a nice guy.
