I am Buying a Dell and Need Help

I would like to get the Inspiron 8600,

Here are my questions

Display, is WUXGA worth it?
RAM is more that 512 required?
Video Card, 32 64 or 128?

I have been out of this for a bit and looking for some opinions, I will be playing DVD, Editing Photos, besides the everyday activities.

Thanks
Purp

FWIW, IMO, you can never have enough RAM. 512 should be sufficient, but it really depends upon what memory-hogging programs you'll be running. Just be sure you can upgrade RAM if you find that you'll need to in the future. If the price diff btwn the 64 & 128 video card isn't going to cost you too much extra, always go bigger. Bigger is better, in this case. Of course, everything depends upon your budget.

I have no experience/opinions with WUXGA...sorry.

Re: I am Buying a Dell and Need Help

WUXGA is just the fancy pants acronym for wide screen resolution. Nothing special, really.
As for the video RAM, if you are doing graphics and watching DVDs, you'll want some RAM there, I'd say 64MB is the least you would want.
My only real question for you is why you want a laptop? Are you mobile, or will this computer be used at a desk? If you don't need a laptop - ie. if you don't need a computer everywhere you go, don't get one.

Or do what I do. Use a cheapo lap top for travel (all I need is e-mail, office and photochop for business trips) and get a good workstation. This way you have great power for less money at your desk, and a cheap laptop you won't worry about as much. Plus, the high zoot laptops are heavier, hard on batteries, and travel tends to beat the piss out them in general.

Re: I am Buying a Dell and Need Help

if you're getting a dell check out http://www.techbargains.com/ for deals - I got my mom a 2.6 for under 200$ (was pricing mistake but she still got it...). Generally speaking you can get a computer that does everything (unless your name is LTL and you need a Cray ) for around ~400 - or you can get a decent HP with an AMD (faster than a respective celeron) :

(from techbargains)

TOP SYSTEM DEALS

Dell Centrino Notebook $899 shipped free

Dell P4-2.53Ghz Desktop with 17" monitor $398 shipped free

HP Compaq X1000 Wide screen Centrino Notebook $1091 Shipped free

Compaq 2200+ Notebook $664 shipped free

HP XP 2400+ Desktop $359 shipped free

Re: I am Buying a Dell and Need Help

I have the dell 8500, I went with the wuxga screen and I like it alot. The resoultion is 1900x1220 and makes everything look sharp. The text is a little small but I don't really have an issue with it.
