Yeah... Well pissed off. The cut is so high that it has to be a truck, or possibly a van - well, or a "Chelsea Tractor" (SUV).

It takes about a deaf and blind drunk to cut a gash that big - I know, because I have dinged the car before very, very slowly, and the "CRUNCH" is so loud that you can't really miss it.

A replacement panel will be in the region of US$500, and I'd expect about US$500 for labour at least. Even used panels at salvage yards cost a pretty penny, and on top of that I need to pay for that to be resprayed...

And what's worse is that I actually need to use it today!

Re: My car has been shervined!!

Thanks Des and Lankyruss.

It sucks more than I can put into words. It's not quite sunk in yet, bucause I have been buzzing around comparing prices etc in case the insurance company comes back to say that the car is totalled, how much the pay out should be and whether or not to buy back. It's 10 years old this year and there is a chance that it could be toast. I'd be gutted to see it go - we've not spent all that many miles together!

Before even touching insurance, see how much it'll cost to fix it. I am no bodywork expert, but perhaps a panel beater could work some magic?

If you claim on the insurance, it could be costly - first of all the excess, then potentially losing a couple of years NCB and then having to disclose a claim for the next 3 to 5 years will bump up your premiums for that amount of time.

As you say, it's an old-ish car - can you live with the damage? Just give it a coat of Hammerite and leave it. Or have a bash yourself - literally, then with some filler.

Do not even mention it to the insurance company until you are certain you want to go down the claim route.

Re: My car has been shervined!!

Thanks Des for the tips. The car is with the body works people now.

The "dent" is a gash right the way through the panel, getting it fixed ourselves will cost about 800 quid tops, going via the insurance will mean we pay the excess, and make up for it in the next few years, which will probably add up to the same.

Anyhow, got given a little manual/stick-shift zetec Ford Ka for the time being. That thing is a hoot to drive!

Re: My car has been shervined!!

Thing about that that gash.. is to just repair it would be a brutal job, and to get it to look good would be a lot more. replacement panel is the best route there

Yeah, that's what we had in mind. It's a bit more than a patch job. I'm nifty with a soldering iron, but that is still a long way off from welding!

No sticker will cover THAT up, lol.

I feel for you Nugget. Not a great start to the day thats for sure. Lets hope Mrs Karma steps in.

Re: My car has been shervined!!

Sorry Nugget, that is a surprise nobody wants

I'm lucky in that I'm a company car driver. My current car, a white Audi A4, got hit on the company car park when it was a week old. Massive black scrape down the middle of the back bumper. Whoever did it never owned up. Didn't cost me anything as it was dealt with by work, but I was still pi$$ed all the same.

Some people just don't care, or panic and flee

Sometimes I wish I was a faster rider, but there's no heroes in the graveyard..............
