Re: Visitor today

Found this while working in the yard today. *Actually he found me, as I didn't even see it 'til it was crawling across my foot! *Snakes are cool, love 'em. *Put him in the backyard so he can feast on some packrats.

Edit: It is a harmless Sonoran Gopher Snake.

Bacchus,

You posted these three as separate topics, so I merged them all together. *You can just reply to the topic to keep posting more, instead of posting a new topic each time. *

Re: Visitor today

Look at his head. It's not a pit viper - so no Rattler.
Looks kinda like a Glossy.

Sure does. I had a very small rattlesnake go across my foot once. And I didn't move an inch, I don't think I breathed.

I see that you know something of snakes. Your observation about the lack of the 'pit' is correct. In addition to looking somewhat like a rattlesnake (although not at all to an amateur herpetologist), these guys will often vibrate the end of their tails, and when that occurs in dry leaves or something similar then the observer is certain that he has seen a rattlesnake. This particular specimen could not have been gentler - he did not object at all when I reached down and picked him up (it IS a male BTW). And yes, it is similar in markings to a Glossy Snake, but differently colored.

Re: Visitor today

Yeah, living here and playing in the mountains you get to know Rattlers, I have had quite a few close encounters with them. Snakes are very interesting creatures, and I took it upon myself to learn a bit more of them a while back.
But yeah, at first glance I could see why some may think it looks like a Rattlesnake, especially with the tail wagging. However, the head is a dead giveaway. A couple other giveaways are that Rattlesnakes typically are fatter through the body, and they won't just slither anywhere near a human, let alone across their foot.
I guess you found a good new pet, though, as it will help keep unwanted rodents away.
