I need recommendations for Video cameras

Today, I let Amber play with a thing of pudding and yogurt and was taking pics from my really crappy dig. camera and said to myself, i need to be video taping this. I am missing out on to much stuff to not be recording it cuz i am too cheap to buy one. So, what do you guys recommend? I would like one that has really good battery life, under $500, and has a view finder and/or lcd screen instead of just the lcd screen and uses compact flash since I already have a 256 meg card (if possible) Thanks guys. reply asap as I would like to buy on tonight. I dont have much footage of her crawling around either.(my parents own a nice video camera). I dont want to be one of those parents that say "Boy, I wish i had taped that" ten years down the road.

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

whatever you get, do not get a mini-dv, they are way too touchy on head adjustment. get a hi-8 camera, you will be happier in the long run.

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

Well, I have a Canon Mini-DV, and it has had a grand total of zero issues. I have no complaints about it, actually - other than the fact that three months after I bought it they had a new model out and the retail price on mine dropped about $300.

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

My Sony miniDV has worked flawlessly, too. I've used it for filming lots of action footage (bike on the track, snowboarding, boating) and it takes great video. I transfer the clips to my PC and use Pinnacle Studio 8 to make some great home DVD's. What do you mean they are way too touchy on head adjustment?

Hi Red Rider,

What model do you have specifically? I am looking to get a MiniDV as well.

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

mine is a JVC and it is currently in for the 3rd service. They keep saying the head is out of adjustment. Who knows? Make sure you get a service contract!

Sony DCR-TRV27. It was about $800 when I bought it but it's probably half the price now. They've also come out with newer models too. I bought it from B and H Photo

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

Thanks. BTW, I checked, and it still goes for $700+. This happens to be a bit high for me. I am looking to mount an on-board camera for the track, and $700 would be a lot to replace if something bad happened.

Are there any recommendations in the sub $500 range?
Image clarity is one of my primary interests.

Thanks

Andy over at South Bay Riders Forum uses a Sony DCR-TRV22. From the videos he posts it has great image quality. They are about $500 (little over). Many of the reviews on some of the sites (Amazon, Circuit City, etc) give it high marks too.

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

Know how you feel Stegy.

I went out and bought a Sony DCR-TRV70. I told my wife I will sell off some of my junk and my stocks but I wont miss getting these moments on tape!

BTW Bestbuy usually has financing deals on the big item stuff.

oh and Dont buy any camcorders from Nigerians!

Looking for a camcorder for similar uses as you Red Rider....couldn't find the one like yours at BH, but did find this one... DCR-HC 40

...Does it have all the things needed for dual lipstick set up Etc?

I'll be taping rides/track footage, as well as using it for family time....are there some others I should be also looking at? Trying to stay below $650.00 if possible.

SPEED.

Re: I need recommendations for Video cameras

The camera has to have line-in recording capability (if you can use the camera to tape a show off of a TV than it does). The model you're looking at appears to have that feature. I worked with the guys at Bulletcam.com to set me up with a remote LANC switch (on/off) and front/rear cam switch, along with the necessary battery pack and cables. Tell them what you need and see if they'll work up a package deal for you.

FYI, I still have all the Fireblades.org video footage on mini-DV tapes. My DVD burner and software program crapped out on me and I have been unable to resolve it. If anyone is interested, I can mail them the tapes if they want to put together a Fireblades event movie.

Great, thanks for the tips too...I'll definately get with bulletcam.com .

There must be someone here that can get the video footage from Grattan edited, and put together .

EDIT: Line In Recording Yes - Digital & Analog
