Anyone have Subaru WRX?

So I'm looking at them online and I found a 2002 WRX (wish I could afford the new STi) at a decent price about an hour away. It's the blue rally color, with the gold wheels, 5 speed and obviously a turbo. I looked up the specs and they have 220-230hp stock, which is decent.

What, if any problems do they have?

Is it expensive to have any service done to them?

I also looked up aftermarket stuff for them. There is a TON but it's really expensive. $1600 for a header, looks like spaghetti!! Must take time to make that many bends in a header.

It is a verry heavy car, so 230 hp isn't that much.

Re: Anyone have Subaru WRX?

I have a '02 WRX I bought new 2 yrs ago. Decent car, I needed to get rid of my old car and got a great deal so that is the main reason I bought it. Overall I haven't had any major problems; the dealer I go to is great which always helps.
My overall impression of the car is good but what there are a few things I just hate about it. The interior is cheap, really cheap no frills interior. I didn't think it would be a big deal when I bought it but it bugs me. It doesn't idle smooth, and the shifter is a bit clucky.
But if you’re looking for performance for the buck it's a great car, I've had some good times in the canyons with this car. You will have fun with it, I had mine but I am planning on selling it in the spring so I can get something more refined.

Thanks for the info. I found a 98 Prelude here in town, and low in price... I may go that rout. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Funny thing is the WRX is cheaper on insurance than the Prelude.. Figures......

Re: Anyone have Subaru WRX?

I don't have the WRX. I wish I did. Instead I have my lowly my01 Impreza TS (pre-bugeye lights)... All I can say is AWD gives you the wow factor. On the dry, well, that's another story but in the wet, on snow, in gravel, on sand, on anything less than perfect traction the Impreza's can't be beat. The my02's are a bit heavier but you can easily squeeze more HP out of that engine.

As mentioned aboves Subaru's have a clunky gear box and a hereditary problem known as "clutch shudder" but the engine's are rock solid. Mine has 100,000km (62,000miles) and still runs with 0% in the emissions tests! yeah, so it's a different engine but Subaru engines are always well built - plane builders try to scoop up Subaru engines 'cause they are stable and rock solid.

Really, it comes down to the fun factor. If you drive backroads or int he snow you will scream for the WRX, if you just do good-weather-only driving then the Prelude will suffice. I say try them both on a rainy/snowy day and then decide.

(having driven both, I'd choose the WRX anyday.)

Re: Anyone have Subaru WRX?

Well I'm kind of Prelude bias. I have a 94 Prelude, but I have always wanted a Impreza. Sigh.........

The bank I know would approve me for the Honda. And I know that aftermarket goodies are cheaper. Choices choices.....

Re: Anyone have Subaru WRX?

A friend of mine has had both the WRX and STI. They are very impressive vehicles with a ton of potential. He got the WRX to 450 rwhp, obviously with a ton of mods. The flat four has a ton of potential. In combination with the all-wheel drive, it's the best buy on the marked for 4-cylinders.

I agree that the interior is a bit cheesy, but you're really paying for the engine/turbo/all-wheel drive. He never had any reliability problems other than the transmission being able to handle all the power he unleashed from the engine.

If you keep the mods simple, cat-back exhaust (to stay legal), intake and electronic boost controller (not manual, too irregular in each gear the digital is incredible) you'll beat just about everyone in your neighborhood.

Re: Anyone have Subaru WRX?

I test drove a buddy's WRX, while I have a chipped 01 golf GTI. The only thing I hated about the car (other than cheap looking interior) is the driver's footwell. It's so narrow there, if you've got big feet, it might suck. (Didn't try to heel+toe, so I can't say well spaced the pedals really are.). I also find the clutch to be a lot heavier than my GTI, so if you're used to soft clutch, you're gonna hate idling in traffic.

Be fast or be last.
