CBR954RR LED Turn Signal Flasher Relay

So, I have a little experience to share...

I added a hotbodies undertail to my bike (02 954), which swapped the rear signal bulbs to LEDs. This sped up the flash rate, which didn't bother me too much.

Recently I went down and jacked my front turn signal. I decided to replace the front ones with an aftermarket LED set. Upon trying them out, I found the signals no longer flashed. I went online and did some research and found that this is caused by the LEDs not drawing enough power from the circuit. The two options to fix the problem are adding power resistors to the circuit, or replacing the turn signal flasher relay.

I read that the resistors can cause excess heat, plus they need to be spliced into the existing wiring. While slightly more expensive, the description of "plug and play" drew me to the aftermarket relay. The person I bought it from on ebay had it listed as plug and play for the 954.

I'll save the extensive details, but here is a brief summary:

The stock relay on the 954 is integrated into the instrument panel. The only way to add an aftermarket relay is to disconnect the wires running to the stock one and connect them to the aftermarket one. The best place I found to do this was after the wiring harness located in the pocket created by the lower, upper and inner left fairings. There is enough exposed wire so that if you ever had to hook the stock relay back up, you could. The two wires you need are the White/Green and Gray wires coming out of the blue wiring harness. I clipped them about 4 inches from the harness. You will be clipping between the harness and the section that goes to the back of the bike. I connected the aftermarket relay to the wires heading to the back of the bike using some 18-22ga insulated disconnects. The nice thing about the disconnects, is that you can switch them easy if you reverse the polarity and if you ever want to reconnect the stock relay, you just crimp 2 more disconnects to the harness side. 4 hours later I had a working turn signal circuit and two new LED signals on the fornt.

If you have any questions about how to do this, let me know. I would hate to see someone else go through all the bull**** I did with the same problem.

Here are some pictures. First is the tie in site with the relay. Second is the relay site. I obviously ran some wire from the tie in under the tank along the frame to the battery area.

where is a good place to buy the aftermarket relay? i tried the resistors and they were getting really hot. thanks

eBay is where I got mine. Just make sure you are comfortable messing with the wiring harness as described in the first post before you dive in.

You want to look for "cbr 929 signal relay". You probably won't be able to find it if you search using 954. Here's a URL:
eBay Motors: honda CBR 600 F4 F4I 900RR 929 RC51 TURN SIGNAL RELAY (item 110126097358 end time May-16-07 07:54:45 PDT)

i already had spliced into the harness trying to use the advanced/autozone brand "el12" or whatever and it didnt work. i actually just ordered one right before your post from customled.com but thanks

Thanks "jawz". I don't know if my 954 is different, the wiring harness is on the "right side" under the gray intake cowl. "Right side" from the prespective of when you are sitting on the bike. Unbolt the two 8mm gas tank bolts and remove the "right-side" gray "ram air" cover. Wiring harness is sitting close
to radiatior cap.

My bad. Mine is on the right too. Sorry if that confused anyone.

Re: CBR954RR LED Turn Signal Flasher Relay

I had a quick question. When you say blink rate is it the rate as if they were completely stock or slightly fast like the if you use the resistor method? I too also have LEDs all around. Thanks

Re: CBR954RR LED Turn Signal Flasher Relay

The blink rate is the same as the stock blink rate when equipped with the stock signals. If you want a quicker blink rate, you can find an adjustable relay.

get a sigal electronic flasher from your local auto shop. got one on y 929 and worked like a charm.

Re: CBR954RR LED Turn Signal Flasher Relay

I'm splicing in a electronic relay so my led turn signals don't blink too fast for my 2001 929rr. The relay must be "electronic" not thermal to work properly with led lights. The electronic relays are timed and the thermal ones are based on the load created by the bulb (non led). The led bulbs do not create enough resistance to activate thermal relays even with the 18 led's on each of my front blinkers. Apparently, you can just replace the turn signal flasher with an electronic flasher and all lights will blink at the correct rate. This is much easier than installing a load resister at each of the 4 blinkers to get the same effect.

Wish me luck.

btw: I bought an electronic relay that has 3 prongs. It's designed for led lights on a trailer. $11 at a local auto parts store. I've seen the load resisters at auto zone for $12 for two. If you have led's on the front and rear you would need two sets for a total of $24. I think the electronic relay is a more elegant solution.

It's done!

I got the electronic relay in and it works great. If you buy an aftermarket electronic relay for a cbr 929 the grey wire (original wiring coming from the connector that plugs into the relay) is the blinker bulbs and may be indicated with an L for light on the relay itself. The white with green stripe wire is the positive and the solid green is negative (like it is for the rest of the bike). The turn signal relay is under the speedometer. You need to take off the windshield and it's the black box on the right when sitting on the bike (the one of the left is the headlight relay).

Ok I'm not sure how to put the pics up here. I will just put up the links of the undertail and integrated turnsignals on the mirrors and a couple of pics at the end of my gf and the old look.

Thanks

I built my leds into the fairing when I did the carbon on them and used the resisters because it was A easy and B I had them

but here is what the lights look like on look like
