helmet question

So... I currently have a scorpion exo 400 full face helmet. I've had it for awhile, and over time the face shield has become scarred/scratched. It's not terrible, but I'd like to get a fresh one for this coming season(face shield I mean, I still like the helmet). I started looking on Amazon for replacements and found they range from $35-$50 USD. The helmet in question currently retails for around $80.

Whilst looking for face shields, I saw cheap helmets for sale for around $40. Read reviews and the one particular helmet that I like the looks of actually ranked pretty high. Has removable/washable insides which I like, people said they were comfortable ect ect... only bad thing people had to say was that at highway speeds, there would be a slight whistle from the shield not sealing perfectly(which really wouldn't bother me, and I would try to remedy anyways).

So here is my question: what differentiates expensive helmets from cheap ones? Comfort? Are the expensive ones more safe? I mean if the helmet is dot approved, it has to meet a safety standard right? The safety with a cheaper helmet is my concern, I'm not gonna skimp on something if it's gonna risk my safety. I'll roll the dice on whether it's comfortable or not, but not the level of safety.

Should I roll the dice or just buy a shield for the scorpion? I'm going to do one of the two... I don't really want to spend more than $50, so I'm not gonna go buy an expensive helmet.

Any advise is much appreciated.

Re: helmet question

That like a decent price for a face shield...
My Shark replacement shield is $80!!!

I liked my Exo when I had it. Was a well made budget helmet, pretty comfy.

As far as price goes; it gets you comfort, aerodynamics, balance/weight differences, features, and extra safety ratings like SNELL and ECE ratings.

Best advice I could give is to just try one on before buying. Some stand out so much more than others in terms of comfort for your noggin shape. Each brand is different.

Re: helmet question

I'm not gonna have a chance to try one on, as it's coming from Amazon.com. I would be rolling the dice on comfort. My only concern is that I don't want it providing any less safety than my scorpion. Plus, if it turns out ok in the comfort region, I would have a spare helmet to boot. The comments say the helmet fits a bit small, but my large size scorpion could stand to be a bit tighter.

Re: helmet question

My first helmet was a Scorpion EXO-700. I promptly got rid of it as soon as I could afford a different lid. Aside from the Scorpion I've now had a Shoei RF1000, Shoei RF1100, Shoei X12, and HJC RPHA10. Compared to all of these, the Scorpion is heavy, loud, and uncomfortable. My favorite of those was by far the X12 and when I can justify spending that on a helmet again, I will.

Though to be honest I'm a bit picky of my helmet choice after I used one 18 months ago at highway speeds and walked away without a concussion or brain damage. I only bought the HJC RPHA 10 because it was well-reviewed, comfortable, and I couldn't justify another X12 at the time.
