DRZ SM or Conversion?

A friend of mine has a 2007 RMZ 450F that he doesn't use. He's thinking about buying a DRZ SM and selling the RMZ. I'm trying to convince him to convert the RMZ instead.

He wants it to be street legal and maybe use it for some track days. Am I wrong? How much should he spend to convert it if he does? I found a kit for $1550

Supermoto Conversion Kit: The Street Legalizer

I know it's low end, but it should still be better than the DRZ SM, right?

Thanks in advance for any input.

either way you cant go wrong. it all depends on your local dmv if he can even use the RMZ as a streetbike.

Re: DRZ SM or Conversion?

Run the RMZ on the highway and you'll kill it.
The DRZ is a MUCH better choice for a street tard.
Teh RMZ has less than a quart of oil. The DRZ has almost 2.
My DRZ makes 52hp...and is stone reliable.

Re: DRZ SM or Conversion?

DRZ is awesome. I put 16000 miles on mine this past summer and it now has 23000 miles. Not a single problem. No valve adjustments, doesn't burn oil, runs perfect.

Re: DRZ SM or Conversion?

So no go on the RMZ 450 as a conversion? I have a 2011 I was considering converting. I figured an appropriate sprocket change would help the highway cruising?!?! The guy at the dealer says I can get the full kit, for legality only, for around $500. I'm sure I'd want to make some suspension changes as well adding cost to the conversion.

Re: DRZ SM or Conversion?

i have 2009 drz400sm and i like it a lot. i can go on and on about it, but i will say it doesnt just blow you back, like pulling the front wheel up. in other words, i would like more power, but it is enough power though. the power is really low end and torque. anyway, i would like to get a full on dirt bike and convert, but it would cost a lot when done and not sure about reliability after riding a lot of miles? plus, after conversion, it would most likely be janky cause of fitment issues and wiring and stuff? man i would get a drz super moto cause its already built for road like dude said about oil....and high mileage. it has perfect brakes, the best front suspension...rear good too, instruments, and just looks like a factory bike, instead of someones dirtbike thats been worked on. id say if you can do it right and get newer bike and pimp out with good stuff, that would be awesome! cost a lot though and not sure if would last, but awesome. othewize, get the drz...it is very fun to ride....it handles, stops, has adequate power, very reliable, looks good, designed for street purpose. my buddy has a 2006 and it really never changed all the way to my year. just get an older one for a few thousand and you are set. i love mine...i would never get rid of it...lots of fun to me. if i could do it over, i would get a husqvarna or aprilia cause much faster, but more money. i got my 2009 for 4800..new! before tax in 2010

Do what you like...like what you do!
