Crank Case Removal 929RR

So I am removing my crank case this winter to have a crack welded that the previous owner 'forgot' to mention. Bottom left on the case, very common on these bikes after tipping over which I did not know at the time. The bike runs great and I have no other issues with it, I just want to fix it properly and get rid of the god awful JB weld... any suggestions on other things to go over and do while I have everything apart? Bike has 30,000 km on it. (20,000 when I bought it)

I had mine done on my 99, although not a 929, I had it done while still in the frame, still together. It was easier to just leave the bike (sans fairings, tank, etc) with the welder. It saved me a ton of time, and he said it should be fine. He was right, runs like a top!

Any reason why you want to remove your engine to do it? Here's a pic of mine:

Ok thats good to know. Maybe I'll just do that. My buddy that is going to weld it for me was just concerned about being able to clean it well enough before he welded it. But I mean theres snow on the ground here and its not a bad time to go over things either

Ok, fair enough. I did have a friend prep the area, and he used an air powered die grinder to shape the hole out a bit. He did block off the open areas to the lower end, but I did still remove the oil pan and made sure to remove as much stray metal filings that managed to get through as I could. Q-tip swabbing and some fresh oil got rid of all the debris.

Great White North, gotta love it eh?
