That time of year again...

We've lost three riders and a pillion here over this past weekend.
Please keep your brains in gear!

A fellow rider happened to be at the hospital yesterday and posted this to Facebook:

"I was at the hospital yesterday having my head scanned just to make sure everything is intact and the guys in this story were brought in:

Young man on back of motorcycle dies in crash in Cottelsoe | News.com.au

The only protective gear the passenger was wearing was a helmet. His mate, the rider was apparently speeding and weaving through traffic when he clipped a kerb and the bike flicked the passenger into a barrier. You should have seen the faces of the paramedics who brought him in after trying to keep him in this world for nearly an hour, and that of the doctor who was going to have to tell his family he was dead. I wouldn't want to wake up today as any of them, the family, and definitely not as the bloke who for a moment of high adrenaline thrills has just killed his mate. Hope his mate's family can forgive him, not sure I'd be able to.

Play nicely out there people.
"

Re: That time of year again...

So tragic and so sad, especially at this time of year. If anything, it highlights the importance of investing in quality riding gear. I for one always ride with full leathers, properly-fitting helmet, boots and good quality gloves, even in hot weather (which we don't get too much of in Northern Ireland). I figure that if I'm going to end up going down the road I want to give myself the best chance of walking away from it.

Re: That time of year again...

after 22years as a paramedic this is always the worst time of year to be on these calls. we put our hart and souls in to the people we take care of and when the out come is bad we greave for the families. let this serve as an endorsment to the proper gear and safe riding. may the next year bring 0 bike related deaths.

Let me thank you for doing the job Rikk.
The world would be a miserable place indeed without people like yourself willing to do the job day after day - I couldn't do it.

We are actually on track for the lowest road toll here in fifty years...but this period of supposed "Christian celebration" is easily capable of pushing the score way up. Currently, Western Australia is at 157 Fatals and 190 Critically Injured for 2013.

158 fatals now, that didn't last long...

Makes me feel queasy just thinking about that family and the friend. One second and your life changes.Too many younger guys gone. I'm going to point out how many of you role models can help keep these numbers down. Nothing society does will help but what the experienced mentor male riders do will always influence these young men.

There's also the responsibility of the passenger - how many young guys do the right thing and gear up but the lovely young lady who wants a ride dresses like a video or movie idol? Do the right thing for yourself guys, don't let her get on!! One car driver, passenger inexperience, stray animal etc could screw you for life. Find any excuse to say no. Keep spare gear, borrow gear, whatever. If she's a good one , then she has a brain as well and she'll respect that you don't want her to go through life looking like hamburger.

Re: That time of year again...

We actually had a good Christmas here on the roads, only one fatal on Christmas day, a 17-year-old fell off a ute and died of a head injury.
We did have a pair of young guys yesterday walking along a road when they were hit by a car that didn't stop - one 19-year-old is still critical.

I really do like the drinking driving adds you Aussies use I always post them to my FB feed at this time of year just in the hope some of my friends take heed.

Its the rider who is responsible for his/her passenger 100% of the time

Rikk, you do a great job my respect to you. Worst scenario Ive lived through was when I kept my mate alive until the ambulance arrived, turned out his Dad was on duty that day
