I have a 2000 929 that shifts through all gears fine except 4th. When upshifting from 3rd into 4th, it seems to hold for a split second until giving it gas to accelerate...then it jumps back down to 3rd. I can shift from 3rd to 4th to 5th quickly and run in 5th and 6th gear fine. ...Just 4th wont keep hold. I trid some searches and read up on 2nd gear problems but didnt find much on 4th gear issues. Do this sound like a fork issue and maybe I can fix this by dropping a fork through the oil pan without pulling the motor? Thanks a million for any help.

It could be either a bent fork or damaged dogs on the gears.
It's probably worth pulling the sump and having a look at the fork and the gears to see if there's any obvious damage.

I had the same 4th gear problem, it's not only 2nd gear that's affected, my bike has been used on the track so the higher gears get a lot of stick. Looks like an engine stripdown is on the cards for you.

You can pop the selector fork out and check it out, if it looks like this

you'll have to strip the engine and change gears out. This fork is straight, the dogs on 4th gear had worn and were causing the gears to disengage and put pressure on the selector fork resulting in the damage seen.

The link below should take you to the stripdown.

Thanks Bladeracer and ganzeegeezer:clap:. wow....:eek:Those pics are disturbing seeing all that metal that came out of your bike :thumbd:. I assume as long as everything goes right back in as it came out I should be in good shape. I am mechanically inclined but never attepted a gear / trans swap....any advice on this other than get a manual?

Thanks guys:thumb:
