Hello All
I recently bought a 954 blade year 02 model from germany. I can hear at low rpm (around idle to 3500rpm slight like knocking sound from engine. It looks more coming like left side of bike but still just to be sure get valves adjusted and cam chain tensioner changed--> no effect . German model seems to have also catalyzer installed which is different from our local model which seems not to have the cat.Does anyone know could the auxiliary air pump could produce this sound(if there is that) ? To my understanding the sound could not be engine problem since the frequency of "knocking" does not match to engine rpm but maybe 1/4--1/3 of actual engine rpm. Also the sound starts to come on after maybe 30sec -60 sec when start engine from cold,at hot engine sound is on immediately after start.Clutch does not have any effect on this sound. How about fuel injection could that produce the sound? Or does anyone has similar experience from this kind of bike?

could be the exhaust valve. Maybe it's little loose and exhaust pulses beat it, when the valve gets turned at 3000rpm to different position the sound goes away?

My bike knocks from the exhaust valve when it's cold. When it has been running for 30-60seconds the sound goes away as the exhaust valve gets hot and expands. or at least that is the explanation I have given myself.

Takes 5 minutes or so for the sound to go away on mine. Has been that way since brand new. Mine makes noise more so in between 2,500 and 3,500 RPM. I have always been told that 954 are just noisy.

My 02 Cbr 954 has a slight tap at idle to around 2500- 3000rpms. I was told by the dealer that it is the cam chain tensioner and that it's normal for the model. My bike has about 10k on it.

Same here with my 01 CBR 929. Ive also heard that the noise is normal and nothing to really worry about. The PAIR valve should not be producing much sound if functioning properly and I dont believe the fuel injection is going to either. It takes longer for the noise to show up when the engine is cold because the cam chain will start to expand a bit as it heats up producing the infamous "noise".

The PAIR solenoid (sorry mistakenly called it a valve) injects air into into the combustion chamber through the cylinder head keeping extra air to burn unburned fuel in the exhaust (for emissions) from entering the exhaust. Basically Honda's way of keeping their bike's emissions levels down.

I know on my bike that there is noise due to a small amount of cam chain movement (slap) especially when its warm. My question is does the noise frequency increase as you rev the bike more. Im going out on a limb but my thoughts are that the other manufactures have their water jackets arranged differently in their bikes in order to absorb some of the mechanical noise the bike's motor makes.

Yes the frequency rises when you turn throttle.Noise will end or go off approx 3500rpm (or maybe other engines noises are stronger then that it can not be separated from other engine noises). where is the pair solenoid situated ? Maybe should try to listen carefully that.

Yeah its normal engine noise and nothing to be worried about. You most likely wont here the noise any longer but it gets drowned out by other engine noises as you said.

The solenoid is located underneath your gas tank near the front of the bike right above the valve covers. It has three hoses connected to it and runs to 2 aluminum boxes (reed valves) on the top of the valve cover. Like I said you hopefully shouldnt hear anything coming from the PAIR if its functioning properly.

I have a knocking sound on idle when warm, it dosent sound good but if i compare to you guys, it seems like you have the same thing, i changed oil/filter yesterday, didnt see any metal flakes from bearings etc in the oil, also ticking when cold, by all means it is very noisy, only 7600 miles.

Mine knocks too. Turns out it's the drive chain. Sounds like it's in the engine, but when I was pushing it home broke I got to hear it real well coasting down a hill.

i too have this "knock"....its not a rattle....and its more prominant between 2500 -3500 rpms....and only comes on when the engine temp reachs 83C (188F).....is most noticable when slowing down for lights etc....or if i hold the engone at 3000 rpms......almost sounds like piston slap.

I am also new to these bikes only owned it 2 mnths......has been buggin me out tbh...even tho the dealer i bought it off has reassured me....i am still unsure.

Also get a slight knockin from under the tank when i hit bumps in the road....almost like somit is loose in the airbox......all very confusing......not sure if i should worry bout these things or just shut up and ride lol

PS : its an 02 954....with 10,000 miles on it
