i've been looking at buying a blade for about 2 months. First i found a pile of cheap parts that i was told was complete, but i decided against it since the vin didnt match anything, then there was a wait.

Yesterday two bikes were listed in my area. one is a 96 918 with new tires, battery and a decent amount of other nice things. the guy is asking 2500 for it. it also happens to have been covered in orange fur which won't last too long( i'm going to ride through campus before i take it off just to see what people will say) The owner said the reason it was covered in fur was to hide the primer gray upper fairing

The other is a 02 954. 80% front tire, 75% rear. just as the 918, it runs and rides. The plastics were painted a nice darker red. he is asking 3 grand for it.

I can get the 3 grand without much trouble but it will be a little harder to support (im sure insurance will be much higher) but it is a better overall bike. the 2500 for the 96 is more affordable and it comes with newer tires and even an extra front that is also new. both bikes are very clean (outside of the fur on the 96) and have clean titles.

is it worth the extra money and higher insurance premium to go for the 954 or is the 96 comperable enough?

Thanks
MTX

You are trying to compare apples to oranges. One is carb'ed the other is F. Inj. 2 totally different beasts. One bike has fur on it...............WTF! Its a muppet movie reject! You are going to get a huge thumbs up for the 954 from the boys here. BUT............the 954 you are interested in looks like it was a stunter. The new paint on the skins means one thing to me. It was wrecked. I personally feel a cage on a 954 is like lifting a F1 formula car and putting 44's under her. Its a waste of a great machine. What will you be using the bike for? If you are going to go out and stunt. Then by all means pull the pin on that 954! Its got some good add-ons! I would think the insurance rates on either bike should be very close. As for the rubber.......You will end up getting new ones anyways. I go through 3 rears and 2 fronts every summer! That is for Roads only. I wont even go into Track days..........

$3000 sounds on the low side for an 02 954, if it sounds too good to be true.... If in fact everything is on the up and up then go for the 954

I don't ride extremely hard due to the lack of good roads here but i will be putting either bike through its paces.

you have a good point teich and it wouldn't surprise me if the 954 was stunted, but if theres no major issues its fine with me . the reason why im torn between the two is fairly simple

-3 grand for the 02 will put me back quite a bit, it will be much harder to afford if I can at all. I'm your typical broke college student.
-the fur can be ripped off the 96 with minimal issues and I can paint the plastics no problem (been painting for a while and have professional gear).

EFI and inverted forks are attractive though. I have a birthday coming up so I may have enough to go with the 02.

Yeah, I say go with the 954 if everything checks out with it. Unless the person takes good care of the carbs on the other bike, more than likely you'll have to do a cleanup on those. And that would basically make up the difference in the two.

seeing as your a struggling student go for the cheaper route, just dont forget to set aside extra for gear if you dont have already. make sure which ever you go with is mechanically sound bike. you have your whole life to upgrade to a better bike go with what fits your budget best for now...

i would love to own a ducati but for now the 929 is more than enough to keep me happy. ive grown quite attached to the blade at this point, either way you cant go wrong with a 94-03 blade, if taken care of will give plenty of good times.

I alredy have gear so thats not a problem. The bike is also coming with a Shoei helmet and a jacket (don't know the brand) so that area is well taken care of.

Ive been leaning on the side of the 96 just for the reasons you said. Its in my price range with possible issues taken into account and it will will be a bike that will last. the one thing about planned obsolence is it makes people want ot go for the newest and best but any 600+cc bike will be better then my '90 FZR600R. my concern was just getting the best deal for my money.

thanks for all the input

keep the jacket ditch the used helmet. only go with new head gear, helmets tend to conform to the shape of the first buyers head so unless you guys share a head, it wont be perfect. could even be potentially dangerous
both are new... I understand what you saying though

MTX the 929 seller is sitting firm on $2800. He wont budge. I think anyone who puts the time and energy putting fur on the bike is in the shallow end of the gene pool. That bike is worth $1000 with the fur ........The 954 seller is "asking" $3000. Offer $2800! Whats the worst that can happen? Now remember that either bike can costs you alot more to fix after it breaks down on the way home. Give each bike a good looksie......Look for signs of wear. IE fluids leaking from gaskets. Drive chain and sprockets for wear as well as cleanliness. I chain and sprocket with 10k on them without any maintenance should be very obvious! If the owner didnt take care of that...........then what other maintenance did he neglect? I will walk away after seeing a neglected chain. Chalk that one up from Lessons learned. I have a little over 23K on my 03'. I can honestly say it looks better than the day it hit the showroom floor! Good luck with your purchase!

he said 2500 on the phone... i get what your saying though. everything sounds good but its what i see in person that counts. the fur wouldent be hard to remove which is why im even considering it.

i haven't heard anything from the 954 guy yet... this decision could be made for me

I'm still going to check out the bike. the hope is to have a fireblade before the second week of may. I'm going for a week of riding down in Ky (im in Ohio) by my friends place. I'm going to be trucking the bike down of course.

Going the cheaper route is sometimes the more expensive option. There really is no tellin the reason the bike is covered with fur. As with the 954, there is no tellin why the bike has been painted (maybe to cover for a drop or two). Make sure that you check the forkseals on either bike. Check the bump stops for bad wear (a major tankslapper can cause that). I also like to check sprockets. If there is major wear on the sprockets then there was not much care for any other things (the whole bike). Just realised that the 954 is sold. Technology is always a big plus.

hey if its mech. sound id still offer him less based on the fur...

furblade :rotfl: i would rather have a different color on every body panel than ride with orange fake fur!

btw rokitt is dead on the money if the little things are neglected you may have a money pit on your hands
I planned on going over the bike thoroughly. I know where your coming from on that.

after my 600R project, im a little weary of small problems. I bought that one for 550 and put another 400 into the bike.i would have preferred not to spend the money but its still cheap for any bike and I get to list new parts in its listing

I planned on bringing a volt meter and checking the charging system. mechanics stethoscope to listen for anything unusual (was told that these liek to spin the #3 rod bearing). I will probably ask the owner to remove the fur before I get there so I can see what shape the plastics are in. then of course a test spin to to see if it does anything unusual. As with any lager purchase, I want to know exactly what I'm getting before ownership switches hands. I'm fine with putting time into a bike, I can't say the same about money.

heres a fun little twist. the person ahead of me on the 954 backed out so i now have a shot. The guy is moving to the UK (from ohio) and is selling it using some sales system. I'm not sure if this is a good thing but we will see. I also asked if i could make payments on the bike
