No you won't see much that side, sadly your have to remove the head and take a look.

Personally I would buy another engine and fix this one. I know its a pain my CBR929 has given me nightmares, it was supposed to help me whilst I strip down my Sportster, but has turned into a bigger project.
If it's something that I can fix I may try, most likely this thing will be parted out and forgotten asap. I don't plan on wasting another $ on this turd.

Any chance the timing could be off? I'm going to take the cams out and see if anything changes. I was hoping to take the cylinder head off to see how the valves look, but there are a few bolts on the right side behind the frame that seem to say nope. I've read a few people have been able to do it, I guess i'll have to figure out what tool will make it possible. I'll take the motor out if I have to, just trying all I can before it gets to that point. I've douched it with penetrating oil, it really doesn't feel like a stuck part, but who knows? I wish I would just give up, but I don't like to unfortunately... :idunno::(:idunno::(:(:(:(:(:(:(:crying:

UPDATE***Just pulled the throttle bodies off, peered into the motor and can clearly see a bent intake valve. I've never had one on any vehicle, does anyone know what the most common reason(s) are for this occuring? I'm still trying to decide whether or not i'm willing to put anymore time or money into this thing. :eek:

The only way your going to bend a valve and that's if a piston has hit it, the most common way is if the cam chain has skipped ( due to tensioner letting go ) .

Your going to need to take the head off I'm afraid and check the top of the piston to.

Yep, anyone know the secret to take the head off without pulling the motor? I read someone had done it but I don't remember the tip/trick. If I have to pull the motor I will, just trying to minimize the labor involved since I'm doing this on the back porch of an apartment building, sad to say. If I have piston damage, that will be the end of this bike for me, I will just start dismantling the whole thing and part it out. :crying:

I know it can be done, in fact I was going to buy a 929 with engine missing its head in the bike.

Engines and heads second hand aren't a great deal of money, it might be worth buying a running engine swapping over and repairing the broken one in your own time, you never know you might enjoy it.

If I can find a good deal on one I might think about it. If the bottom end is ok I may just buy a new head for a few hundred on ebay instead of trying to replace and seat new valves.

check to see if there is any damage to the top of the piston/s, you will need to look into why the valve contacted with the piston, usually its because the cam chain slipped because of the tensioner letting go, which is remote because you should have gotten a lot of warning before it done that, its very audible.

The weird thing is it happened while I was trying to diagnose a no start issue. I guess that is the saving grace that it may have not caused a ton of damage since the bike was not actually running, but it also seems odd that it would happen in that scenario? From what I can see one of the eight intake valves is bent, but until I get the head off I won't know about the exhaust valves. The only thing I can think is it jumped timing maybe? I had the airbox off trying to make sure the injectors were spraying when it just locked up. All the tips i've gotten were folks thinking it was an electrical thing so that's what I was focused on unfortunately. I'm going to get the head off on wednesday and see what I see, and go from there. If it's just top end i'll fix it, if not i'm done with it. Wish me luck! If you knew how unlucky I am, you would laugh at that last sentence.:(

In case this helps anyone since I couldnt find it myself, if you remove all the engine mount bolts other than the swingarm one, you can lower/tilt the motor forward/down quite a bit. Just remove all 4 motor mount bolts, then the bolt below the seat with the pinch bolt. I put a jack with a small piece of wood under the motor on the left side and a few jack stands around the swingarm. It moved the motor enough for what i was needing, to get the 12mm cylinder head bolt to the rear off on the right side. Unless you have to pull the whole motor out, this is a great alternative. I just bagged up all the bolts and labeled them as I removed them. You will have to remove the exhaust for somewhere to prop the motor from the bottom. I removed the radiator but i'm not sure if the has to come off or not, but i already had it drained so I figured I would get it out of the way. Wish I had pics, but hopefully this will help at least one person.

Just got the cylinder head off...the end. Anyone needing parts 2001 929rr erion racing edition I have it all, other than a motor...:rant::thumbd::crying:

Yep, i've had this bike for just over a year now. I'm not exaggerating when I say i've ridden it 30 minutes total, if that. This just feels like it was never meant to be for me. It broke 2 exhaust valves and they ended up on top of the piston in 4 pieces. They made some divots on the piston I could feel, it started raining so I didn't get a great look at it but I definitely felt them. If it didn't crack the piston, maybe I can throw a used head on it and see what happens? I really think this means I'm supposed to give up and try and cut my losses, what do you guys think? :crying:

You never know, a new head might bring you many thousands of mile of joy...or you could continue to have issues. You just never know.

If you could find a used head, maybe put it on, get it running and sell it? Or part it out and while you will get more money, you do more work and will take longer to get it.

Yeah, i'd like to know what caused it to do what it did before throwing more money at it. If I knew why it did it, i'd know what to do. Oh well, riding season is all but over anyhow. Got some time to decide.:confused:

As stated previously, The only way I would know of this happening would be due to the cam chain slipping knocking the timing out.

What kind of CCT have you got on there?, is it manual or OEM spring CCT?.

If there is damage to the pistons/, your need to replace them.

For the sake or messing about, just buy a second hand engine they can be expensive or cheap as chips, and seeing as your that far just service the new engine and then replace it, that way you can either scrap the old one or have a bit of fun and repair it, if I were around the corner I would buy the old one and just repair it for fun.

I know the bikes been a pain in the arse, but by the sounds of it if this hadn't of happened you would be out on it having fun, so most of the work was done.

It's the stock cct. The piston isn't cracked, it does have some scars though. When it happened it would have been during crank since the bike wasn't running at the time, so it wasn't high rpm's not that it matters. I'll get a better look at it sunday and make some decisions.:crap:
