Hey guys back for some advice. Been doing some reading because I've been hearing some Ticking noise from 0-4k rpms. Seems its the Cam Chain Tensioner? It doesn't sound terrible no slapping or knocking kind of just sounds like when u put a piece of paper into a fan lol, more annoying than anything.

I got about 10K Miles now not sure if this is a common problem that it needs to be replaced or just one of the quirks you just live with?

Runs great no mechanical problems. Just had a tune-up but my Chain/Sprockets are at the end of their usefulness.

Update, took it apart and it looks like it is the cam chain tensioner. From what I read the automatic tensioner from honda sucks, better off with a manual one.

What brands do you guys recommend?

Awesome thanks for the response! I actually ordered one of those and the gasket as it seems to be the most popular replacement. Was it easy to install? How often do you do adjustments?

Thanks
dont do what I did when I put the bike back together mix up the tps and map sensor plugs
I got a service manual so hopefully that should help some! I will make a note of that, doesn't sound like fun to mix those up!

I'm just a little shocked I mean granted the bike is 10 years old but it only has 10K miles i'm really puzzled as how this tensioner has already kicked the bucket.

It's a huge pain to install.

I tilted the engine forward in order to fit a wrench on the upper bolt.

Adjust it whenever is starts ticking!

Its not that hard to put it in. I did it in 40min. You have to find TDC then you adjust it according to the play in the cam chain( I think its an 1/8in). There should be instructions on the back, or you could always youtube it.:D As far as adjustments go, I never touched it. My last bike had about 10k hard miles on the APE.
How the hell do you get to the thing? Did you use a special tool to reach past the frame? For the life of me I can't work out how to do it, short of taking the whole engine out?
I just used a universal joint to get at it. I also used a 1/4 in drive. If you remove the gas tank that kinda helps(mine was already off)....
Well with the wrench I used, it was a PIA.
We have all been there... At least you got it done and did it yourself:clap:
I've done 3 now, if that counts...
Awesome. Thanks for that. Guess I'll be grabbing shiny new universal joint for the kit tomorrow. Cheers. :)
Feck even with that on a 1/4" drive, I couldn't wiggle it back there...good luck!
take the gas tank and airbox off. then put the bike on a rear stand, a jack under the motor, not in the middle of the pan unless you have a 2x4 that spans side to side, then take out the upper motor mount bolts and lower the engine down. thats how i did mine. gave me enough room to get to it. it wont come down too far either cause of how the rear is mounted. also pull the air injection hoses off the head. hope that helps
Thanks guys lots of good replies and useful info gonna use it all. Just a question for you guys. I've parked the bike since I heard the noise but its going to be 70 tomorrow :crying:

Think I could ride to and from work on her ~45 miles or so. Take it easy? Or do you guys recommend parking it until I put the APE in.
IMO it would depend on how loud it was, and if it was just when i started it up or if it continued the whole time its runnin. If thats the case i would wait. If its just when you start it you'll be fine:thumb:

Eh i started it up, its pretty noticeable when its cold and even when it warms up :crying:

Over 5K RPMS i couldn't really hear it but thats probably because of my exhaust. I'm starting to curse the day I bought this thing. Decided not to press my luck as I still have to ride it ~20 miles on Sunday to get it fixed.

I hope your talkin bouth tha old tensioner, not tha bike:eek: You havnt ridden till you ride a Honda. Imo, lb. for lb. tha most reliable brand there is(as far as power sports go). Plenty of nice weather around tha corner.:) Gd Lk!

Yeah your right tbh the short time i've had this bike and the extremely small amount of miles i put on I can easily say its probably the nicest bike i've ridden yet. I'm hoping this will be the last of the issues for the summer I don't think my sanity or my wallet can take anymore.

I am really mad though at the tensioner lol I just don't get it, 10K miles? already done? Terrible design if that is the case.

Thanks, hopefully all goes well and it doesn't explode on my trip to the shop on sunday. :rotfl:
