929 cam swap

I have a 2000 CA model 929, with around 22k on it now. I doubt a valve adjustment has ever been done, so I figure I should do one before too long - especially if I keep doing trackdays.

I figure while I'm in there, it might make sense to swap in some more aggressive cams. I'm under the impression that the CA model has less aggressive cams than the 49 state versions did. I'm also under the impression that the 954 has more aggressive cams than the 929, which would bump power up a bit more.

So, is it worth swapping cams? Currently, the bike is fairly stock aside from lack of bodywork. It's got a MIG high mount on it, but that's it. I've got a PC3 for it, but it doesn't work so I'll have to see if I can get it fixed. I figure with a cam swap it'll need a tune... is it worth trying to find a cheap full system too?

The Cali has the same cams as every other 929.
The 954 has 0.25-0.35mm more lift which isn't huge and with grind tolerances could even be a marginal difference over your current cams. It'd be worth measuring your cam lobes while you're in there. The 954 profiles _may_ be more aggressive but I've never compared the two to be able to say.
You'd do better to get some aftermarket cams if you're going to go to the effort.
For some reason I was under the impression that the CA model was down 10-15hp from the other models, is it due to some other restriction? I guess if the cams are the same it doesn't make sense to swap, I had just thought they were different.

I wasn't aware the Cali bikes were down on power at all.
Have you seen any figures to compare them?

Can a mod please move this to its own thread?

What sort of bike, how much mileage and how long have you had it?
Does the oil light ever come on when it's running?
How long has it being knocking?
Was anything done to the bike before it started knocking?
Does it have the correct level of clean oil?
I'd suggest a compression test or valve clearance check first e out bent valves as those are easy checks.
I've got an extra set of 954 cams sitting in my garage. Let me know if you are interested
