im looking to get a new chain and sprocket for my 01 929. i wanna do the 520 -1 + 2 conversion but not sure what to get i guess. i have heard people say aluminum sprockets are bad and they wear out faster. is this true?

I would agree they wear faster than steel sprockets but I've only run 520 sprockets which you'd expect to wear faster than 530 stuff anyway (since it's narrower).
If you aren't going to run an aluminium rear sprocket I wouldn't bother doing a 520 conversion as the weight saving in just the chain is minimal.
