hi all as posted before i just bought my 1st ever fire blade a 93 cbr900rr, i Have read that they where alittle nervious in the front can anybody give me anymore info how serious is it or only in extreme conditons or so on i have not picked up or riden the bike as yet but i am very curious ecuse the spelling maths is my thing

I run a 1994 CBR 900 RR - and I found it a little twitchy. I replaced out the standard 16" front wheel for a 17" from a similar age CBR600 (I could have used from a similar age VFR750, VFR400 or CBR400). The 17" slowed the front a little a suits my riding more.

I am not sure if this would be a straight exchange for the 1993 blade..

I have several friends that own 16" front fireblades of various ages (the bikes) and they like the handling - so I guess its personal preference.

Thanks for the info. I would like to keep the bike as close to original as possable, Are any of the 17,s mentioned above the same spoke patten as the 16" to keep the same look regards

I only know the 1994 model foxeye. Not sure if the 1993 model blade runs a speedo cable front the front hub or an electronic sender from the small drive sprocket.

Be sure to check before purchasing a wheel - as it may alter the process (it does not for the 1994 foxeye as the wheel bolts straight in wth the blade spacers)

The 17" rims I am using are six spoke, same colour and almost indistiguishable from the 16" - I believe that I get a wider tyre choice also....

Speaking of which - if you do swap - I am told that the correct tyre size is a 120/70/17, but I have used a 120/60/17 also - perhaps down to preference???

You can only use a 1995-1998 CBR600 F3 wheel. Use your 900RR axle and wheel spacers, and rotors. It will bolt right up. You should also use the 120/70-17 tire.

You will need to convert your speedo drive to that of the the 1995-1997 900RR. This is a digital sender that runs off the front sprocket, as opposed to the cable drive off the front wheel on your '93.

When you do this, you can either fit the:

* 95-97 900rr gauges
* 98-99 900rr gauges (but you need a custom SpeedoHealer than can only be purchased from the factory in Hungary - about $100, and you'll need the temperature sender from a 98-99 900rr too.

Go over to rrzone.com and you'll find a write up there in the how to. Look at the 'How to install the CBR600 F4i digital gauges'. You can fit these gauges as an option to the 98-99 900rr gauges if you get the custom SpeedoHealer and the 98-99 temp sender. Then you'll have a nice set of digital/analog gauges. And trust me, seeing your speed on a digital display is a hell of a lot easier to read than on an analogue dial!!!

Absolutely follow Sime's advice re which wheel to go for.

I am using a CBR600 wheel at the moment, and whilst the breaker (motorcycle salvage yard) I bought it from stated that I could also use a similar wheels from the models I mentioned - you would need to independently check this advice.

I can only vouch for the CBR600 wheel I am using.

Hey guys, Sorry to jump in and re-start the thread but I have a 17-inch rim I've not mounted yet. I also have a spare 17-inch 120/70 tire. Why would the profile (70 series) go unchanged with a larger diameter wheel? Does this mean the same look will remain as opposed to a lower profile look?

I was also told the front end would need to be lowered a bit. Is that right too?

The profile is unchanged because the width is now smaller. Stock was 130/70. To keep the front end the same height with a 17" without any other changes, you have to put on a 120/65. I went with the 120/70 and then lowered the bike about 5mm in the front by sliding the forks up in the triple clamps. The bike is a bit more stable at speed, but it's turning slowed down a bit in the twisties. Overall better though.
I also have a 92 with the gear speedo. I didn't feel like buying all new instruments, so I machined the speedo down to fit in the new wheel. Works as good as stock.

Thanks Skater! So, if I wanted to go with a 60-series tire, then I would have to lower the front end substantially? I'm much better with sorting out fitment on cars than I am with bikes. :(

No, if you went with a 60-series tire (effectively lowering the height of the front of the bike by nature of a shorter sidewall), you'd have to raise the front by dropping the forks in the triples a bit. But I wouldn't go with the 60-series at all. They were designed for specific 600cc bikes and will alter the way your bike handles. Stick with the much more common 120/70 and you'll be happier with the tire selection and handling...

Incidentally, the "skittishness" of the 900RR is now largely the accepted norm with modern bikes--it was skittish compared to bikes of yesteryear, but not compared to, say, a '98 R1... LOL!! The biggest reason to change to a 17" front wheel is tire selection. The 16" front drastically limits you to a certain Michelin and B-stone (if I remember correctly).

Thankfully, my '96 came with 17" Marvics (and as overkill, a set of Ontario Moto-Tech triples that slows-up the steering). I rode a friends '93 900RR and it felt NICE. Of course, he had a nice Scott's damper on it...

Guys

I have run a 120/60 17 when I first changed from a 130/70 16....

I liked the way it handled - sure footed etc. All the tyre guys I have spoke to say it must be a 120/70....

Perhaps personal preference comes into this - Tadeo Baba San (or was it Honda fuelled by what was popular at the time) personally believed that a 16" rim was the way to go...

Still - I run 17" 120/70 Metzeler Race tecs now and they are great... but If I was offered a 120/60 at a good price I would use that also.

Also - I can confirm that I have used a VFR400 (NC30) front wheel as well as the CBR600 front wheel I currently use in the front of my blade (the NC30 is currently using its own front wheel now that it is running....)

I would go with the 120/70... but be aware that personal preference plays a part...

Thanks Saxon Blade! Very happy to have your experience to draw from as well. I have a Bridgestone Battle Axe sitting around that is 120/70 for the new wheel b/c I bought the set for a steal when I needed a new rear. I think I'll run with that for now.

Can you re-drill your discs?
F3 and early 900RR discs are a different pattern.
'94-'97 900RR are the same as F3 discs.

You are correct and thanks for chiming in! '92-'93s were the only models that used a different disk pattern which means the 16-inch front wheel was also different on these. Turns out re-drilling wouldn't work too well. Also, because I had the speedo assembly connected to the wheel, I also needed a spacer for at least one side.

Thankfully I solved this one last night. If anyone else finds themselves in my position ('93 900rr with correct F3 wheel w/ out disks), simply acquire:
* Front disk set compatible with VTR1000F (1997-2004), CBR900RR (1994-1997), CBR600F (1995-1998), VFR750F (1994-1997)
* Honda spacer set compatible with '95 CBR 900rr

Here's an image of the disk set I purchased on eBay for $120 (1/4 cost from Honda)
