I picked up a '94 RR project to go along with the others in the garage. Front end, gauges, fairings and wiring harness (really chopped up) have been swapped to 96+, so it's going to be fun to get everything sorted out, but I like the challenge. Replaced the shredded rear fender, put on a rear wheel, threw a battery in it, cleaned up some of the wiring, and we have power, but starter won't turn over. There were only 5 bolts holding the alternator cover on, so I pulled that and found the 1st bit of carnage. After soaking it for a few days, I pulled the timing cover, tried to turn it over and the bolt snapped, so it's seized up good. Time to look for a donor engine...

I was able to un-seize the engine, will be interesting to find out what the problem is once I tear it apart. In the meantime, cleaning up my working space to get ready for the donor bike to show up, hopefully by the end of next week. Have some fairing pieces trickling in, still need to source rear fairings, mid-fairings up front, and a '93-94 upper, keeping eyes peeled on eBay. If anybody has extra fairings, let me know.

Man plastic is so hard to come by. Fingers crossed they do show up you’ll have to pounce right away.

as mentioned on some of my previous posts, the tail fairings are the same from 1993-1997. the only differences are color.
I was under the impression that '93-95 had a single hole in the fairing, and '96 and up had two? Share some pics if you have them, as the tail fairings I currently have aren't worth the effort required to fix them.

I've been able to source all fairing pieces via eBay, have been lucky and seen the ads pop up at the right time. My donor bike is here, incredibly clean. I've gone through the carbs, sorted out a couple of wiring issues, replaced burnt fuses etc. Starts up relatively easy, idles great. However, as soon as it warms up a bit, there is a rattling noise coming from the right side of the engine. First thought was CCT, but it already has a manual one installed, and it's not too tight. I drained the oil and there a few metallic flakes in it. I'll pull the valve cover to adjust the valves, hopefully the rattle is just the valves or a worn-out cam chain guide.

Looks like I'll be going a different direction with this project, as I've been able to sort out the paperwork for the '96. So, current plan is to complete the '96 and ride it, as I was able to find a nearly complete '93 from an old friend. Once the '93 arrives, I'll be able to look it over and borrow any needed misc parts from the '94, then I'll be selling ht '94.

Anybody know where I can find a center fairing piece for a '96 where the seat lock mounts? I have all other plastics for the bike.

'93 is white/blue/red, getting it from original owner who bought it new during the summer of '93. Ironically, it's the first 900RR I ever rode...

I'd prefer OEM for the rear cover on the '96 as all other pieces are OEM, but I'll go aftermarket as an interim solution. Just need to find a fairing shop that will sell me an individual piece.

I saw an oem nos show up 1 time on ebay when I was looking for one. Even finding a Chinese one was impossible. I couldn't even find a Chinese tail kit to pull one from. I searched by part number, name, description, everything. I even contacted the eBay stores selling used fairings directly and asked them to keep a look out. Nothing. I might still have the one from mine but it's missing the mounting tabs. If you want to work on it, I can see if I have it. Shipping on that would be a small flat rate box I bet.
