'94 900RR Project

I picked up a '94 RR project to go along with the others in the garage. Front end, gauges, fairings and wiring harness (really chopped up) have been swapped to 96+, so it's going to be fun to get everything sorted out, but I like the challenge. Replaced the shredded rear fender, put on a rear wheel, threw a battery in it, cleaned up some of the wiring, and we have power, but starter won't turn over. There were only 5 bolts holding the alternator cover on, so I pulled that and found the 1st bit of carnage. After soaking it for a few days, I pulled the timing cover, tried to turn it over and the bolt snapped, so it's seized up good. Time to look for a donor engine...

Donor bike will arrive after a couple of weeks, will make some progress then
I was able to un-seize the engine, will be interesting to find out what the problem is once I tear it apart. In the meantime, cleaning up my working space to get ready for the donor bike to show up, hopefully by the end of next week. Have some fairing pieces trickling in, still need to source rear fairings, mid-fairings up front, and a '93-94 upper, keeping eyes peeled on eBay. If anybody has extra fairings, let me know.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to stay with '93-94 plastics for the rear sections.
as mentioned on some of my previous posts, the tail fairings are the same from 1993-1997. the only differences are color.
I was under the impression that '93-95 had a single hole in the fairing, and '96 and up had two? Share some pics if you have them, as the tail fairings I currently have aren't worth the effort required to fix them.
With plastic harder to find I’ve fixed some pretty bad stuff. How bad are yours.
I might be able to salvage the two side pieces, but they're not OEM so I'm not sure how strong they actually are...
I've been able to source all fairing pieces via eBay, have been lucky and seen the ads pop up at the right time. My donor bike is here, incredibly clean. I've gone through the carbs, sorted out a couple of wiring issues, replaced burnt fuses etc. Starts up relatively easy, idles great. However, as soon as it warms up a bit, there is a rattling noise coming from the right side of the engine. First thought was CCT, but it already has a manual one installed, and it's not too tight. I drained the oil and there a few metallic flakes in it. I'll pull the valve cover to adjust the valves, hopefully the rattle is just the valves or a worn-out cam chain guide.
Here's a pic of the donor bike. Need to source a '92-'94 front fairing/gauge mount, and '92-94 gauges for the '94.

Looks like I'll be going a different direction with this project, as I've been able to sort out the paperwork for the '96. So, current plan is to complete the '96 and ride it, as I was able to find a nearly complete '93 from an old friend. Once the '93 arrives, I'll be able to look it over and borrow any needed misc parts from the '94, then I'll be selling ht '94.

Anybody know where I can find a center fairing piece for a '96 where the seat lock mounts? I have all other plastics for the bike.
'93 is white/blue/red, getting it from original owner who bought it new during the summer of '93. Ironically, it's the first 900RR I ever rode...

I'd prefer OEM for the rear cover on the '96 as all other pieces are OEM, but I'll go aftermarket as an interim solution. Just need to find a fairing shop that will sell me an individual piece.
Both bikes will be for sale soon to make some space for another project coming in.

'94 - Clean FL title in my name
Definite project bike, engine was seized when I got it, but it's loose now.
Have most parts required for completion, will need engine rebuild.

'96 - Registered in my name in VT, have documents required for obtaining title
Incredibly clean, will need some engine work as after it warms up there is a knock/rattle. I drained the oil to check and there is a small trace of shavings, so whatever is wrong is either minor, or is a recent issue.

Feel free to PM me with questions on both/either bike as it will be a bit before I'm able to post up for sale ads with the details.

'94 is for sale, $1,500 takes it (that's what I have into it with getting the paperwork sorted out and a clean FL title).

Some plans have changed and I've decided to keep this bike also. 😎 As the donor bike I bought was so clean, I've decided to cannibalize it for this project, will sell the '96 once I have everything I need off of it.

Found a replacement power plant so stripped everything out except for the swing arm. Need to find a tool to remove the lock nut, any suggestions are welcome for sourcing that.

I've found a couple of options that might work, otherwise it's time to get the dremel out and cut up a socket.
Found a tool to remove the swingarm lock nut, so old swingarm and rear shock are out, replacements installed, along with new rear brakes. Wiring is up next, then adjust the valves and the engine can go in.

Big update since last posting, a few pics to share. Wiring harness rebuilt, valves checked, all remaining paint overspray from previous owner/s removed from frame. Engine's in the bike, wired, exhaust, stator, reg/rectifier, fuel pump, etc... Everything needed for the bike to run, and it's alive!

Converted speedo from front wheel cable driven to speed sensor from the sprocket cover as I have a '96 wiring harness and set of gauges that were on the bike when I first bought it. Test fit front cowl to make sure aftermarket bracket was good, decided to throw all of the plastics on to ensure they all line up before getting ready for paint.

Long time without an update - carbs are all dialed in, bike runs/rides great. New to me rear fairings installed, 93 tank, replacement upper fairing, everything is bolted up, ready for bodywork/paint. New windshield installed, need to get the levers replaced and complete the revamp of the rear fender and it will be close to stock. Replaced all components in the charging system. Also have OEM exhaust for it, but it needs a bit of touch up before installation.

It’s come a long way. Looking good
It's ready for you to do some of your magic with the paint.
