i have ~29K on my 954 and it just started knocking loud upon startup around the center rear of valve cover and as the engine warms goes down to a mild knock but this sounds like coming from the front of cylinder head (perhaps 2 completely seperate knocks), i took it around the block to listen & also heard it make another larger knock/stumble while cruising about 45mph. I'm guessing its the cam chainer tensioner & i prolly could use a valve adjustment which i havent done yet? i talmost seemed like the knocking was from not getting enough oil at startup and then as soon as it warmed up the oil lubed it...

29K miles, right? No valve adjustments? Yeah.. DEFINITELY time for valve adjust, especially if you didn't do one at 16k miles (which is the interval between valve clearance checks).. And when you do it, you'll probably find the exhaust side of things is more out-of-range than the intake..
