my 02/954 makes awfull ticking sounds on start up when cold. This ticking sounds like valve train, but not 100% sure. It has always ticked on start up, but before my last oil change it would only last a few seconds max. Now it can last upwards of a minute(haven't timed it-but darn close) then will go away.

My local shop says unlikely to be the cct, but wants $420 to do a valve adjustment+320 to change out the cct if this is the problem.

Any advise on this issue would be helpfull.

Bike has 28500km, used motul 5100 -10w50 for last oil change mid september last fall. After oil shange is when the lenght of ticking changed, put on 600km and parked it for the winter.

thanks for and input!!!

but when i polished the frame, i seen the dont know what it's called but has 2 cables and goes to exhaust valve. well one cable was unhooked, i hooked it back up. now just makes small clicken sounds when i 1st start it up. but it lost some power. but the sound before that was allmost like a clang sound

mine makes noises when started up just normal for these bikes. I would recommend changing the oil to 10w-40 instead of 10-50 might lower the time you hear the ticking and I think 10-40 is what is recommended for these bikes.

Hi there, mine is the same 03 954 ticking sound when starting it up but i found out that its the clutch basket is making all the ticking sound try to start the bike put it in neutral then press the clutch lever then you'll find out that the ticking sound is maybe your clutch but no worries if thats the problem its normal because of wear.:)
