Hi
Today I got an awful rattling noise in my engine, after a short drive of approx. 150 KM I stopped to take a break and talk with some friends.
One of my friend of course had to give a little gas on my bike to hear the sound of the new slip on exhaust.
But when he did that he was up in the rev limiter area, and when he had finished there was a terrible rattling noise in the engine.
Sounds like it might come from the cam chain.
Play in chain or broken rails, i dont know = p

There was a slight hint of valve ticking before.

The engine runs perfectly smooth and fine but I have loaded the bike on a trailer

Anyone know what might have happened? cam chain tensioner?

Planing to start picking apart the engine next week, but there is much wisdom here, maybe someone has the answer =)

Get smarter friends for a start.
If he eased it up to the limiter then it should not have hurt anything.
But if he whacked the throttle open and allowed the engine to go way past the limiter you may have done some damage.
Does it still make the noise?
Hold many kilometers on the oil?

You know, there's always one person who is not as sharp as the rest.

He whacked the throttle open and allowed the engine to at least hit the limiter.

I turned of the ignition at once when it happend, only started it for 15-20 sec to try to locate the sound. it did not sound like a smasched valve, more like some chain rattle.

the oil has about 4800 Km. I were going to change oil and filter this weekend :clap: But now it looks like full engine overhaul =/

Can you video the noise?

You need to avoid these people ;-)

My suspicion was correct
Dismantled 6mm screw on the cct today and inserted a screwdriver, put some pressure on the adjusting screw and the sound was gone.
Dismantled cct and it was about 7-8mm play with 0 resistance.

Now the big question, New OEM or Manual one ? :huh:

How to tune the proper tension on the timing chain using a manual?
Is there a spring mechanism in these too?

And what about the danger of too much tension and unnecessary wear and tear on the timing chain

Any experiences? :rolleyes:

I put an APE on my 900 and it works great! Just screw it down until you start to feel a Slight resistance and then turn it another half of turn and tighten. Or you can take off the ignition advance cover so you can see the can chain and tensioner!

Opened the tensioner yesterday, the spring was broken by the hook that is attached to the housing, bent a small hook on the spring and mounted together.
Works perfectly :thumb: But i think I'll order a new tensioner and replace it.
Nice to know that this works well as an emergency fix, I've driven a tank after the modification and no noises or problems :cool:

I can take some pictures, but I just did a temporary repair while I waited for the new tensioner from japan, I would not recommend running around with a modified spring where the spring steel is bent 90 degrees =) steel strength is reduced quite a bit

After all that,just changing the tensioner solved the problem?the cam chain,and all the rest of the parts are ok ?...how much did the tensioner cost ?

it was only the spring in the tensioner that snapped, all the parts in the engine survived, the chain did not jump any teeth. Here in Norway I paid aprox $ 200 for chain tensioner + gasket from a Honda dealer :thumb:

The spring only pushes the tensioner out as the chain goes slack on closed throttle, the ratchet is what keeps it tensioned. As long as the ratchet is good, the failing spring shouldn't cause any serious harm. But the engine will get noisier as the chain wears without the tensioner taking up the slack.
As you said, simply pushing the tensioner manually through the ratchet is all you need to do - same as adjusting a manual tensioner.
