Hi All,

I have a '99 cbr900 with 45k on the clock.

The rear shock needs some attention. Damping is basically gone, and feels all spring now.

I am trying to work out what option will be the best value for money in sorting the rear suspension out.

1. Rebuild std Showa shock
2. Rebuild std Showa shock replacing the spring
3. Rebuild std Showa shock with gold valving
4. Throw Showa away and replace with aftermaket option (I have been looking at Hyperpro - $1000)

The bike gets used for commuting, sports and the occasional track day.

Cheers.

Hi ads

I recently had the same problem and had mine completely rebuilt by a local racing guru and suspension expert called 'MP custom valve'. It cost me the equivelant of $250 and now it feels better than new. In my opinion a rebuild will do it a world of good. (Bike is also used for commuting with the occasional track day/breakfast run.)

The shock was knackered. The shaft was rusty and resulted in it breaking the seal and all the fluid leaked out. Here is a before and after pic.

I had exactly the same problem with my '98 RRW. I ended up throwing the old shock out, bearing in mind the OEM Showa was never designed for a rebuild although there are places that will carry out the necessary modifications to all a rebuild.

I was lucky enough to pick up a second hand Ohlins unit of e-bay for about £230 in near perfect condition, fitted it myself and had a local Ohlins specialist check it over, adjust it and fit new internals in the forks along with a complete fork service.

The result an instant new bike. The changes in handling were unreal, much tighter, no more wallow in the corners, got rid of the chicken strips, knee down, brilliant. The best modification anybody could do to a bike, particularly when the bike is a few years old or has a few miles on the clock...
