Hi all,
I was changing my brake pads today and noticed the space between the pistons and disc are different on each side of the caliper. The left side of each caliper has more space than the right. It's a problem cause the new pads are a very tight fit on one side. I also bled the brakes and changed hoses. Would this be a fork alignment issue? Thanks.

Have you put the spacers in the correct side, they're not the same size.

I'm with Gunker on this one, seems you have the smaller spacer on the right side, pushing the wheel too far to the right.

The spacer with the flanged end goes on the right side (if sitting on bike), and the non flanged one goes on the left.

Did you have the wheel off at all? If the spacers are on the correct side of the rim the wheel could be in backwards. Check both just to be sure.

Wow thanks for the suggestions. No, I didn't have the wheel off. I'll remove the front whee tomorrow and check how things have been installed

Make sure you re-install it properly.

Leave the pinch bolts undone. Tighten up the main spindle and nut first, torque it up, spin the front wheel a couple of times and use the the front brake to centre the wheel, then do up the pinch bolts. If done correctly the wheel should spin without the disc dragging on the pads.

So the tyre has been installed backwards. The arrow on the tyre is opposite to the disc. Swapping the spacers only reversed the issue but flipping the tyre results in the correct spacing. Why is that? Does the rim have a direction too?

Yes, on one of the spokes of the rim there should be a directional arrow.

Here's a 954 rim. Arrow on the spoke on the left by the outer rim.

Mine don't seem to have a mark. They are chrome 929 rims
Same rims for 929 954. Yours were probably ground away prior to ruining.....sorry, chroming them. If you look at the spoke in he picture you can see the leading edge has a bit of a longer angle to it. Match yours up and that leading edge will be the front direction of rotation.

So all this now begs the question. Had you ridden the before you began this work to it:idunno:

Ok so comparing the picture to mine, the tyre is on correctly but the discs have been installed backwards. Now the next problem...those bolts on the discs are made of butter and I've stripped a few!...
I've owned the bike for 5 months and I'm slowly replacing bits as I get time and money. A previous owner has done a few dodgy things in the past so I'm not surprised something is backwards

Ok I see, those pesky previous owners......they have a bad habit of "messing things up" lol.

So by flipping the wheel and maneuvering spacers are you able to get the correct spacing inside the calipers?

And when you say stripping, you mean the hex part has rounded out, or the heads broke off? Honda does require they get replaced one removed, and who knows, yours could be 3-4 times removed and installed.......dang PO's

The disc bolts only need 20NM of torque much less that you think (I've found this out from experience!) so always use a torque wrench when tightening (never try and guess) I use some thread lock and a dab of torque paint to mark the position of the nut.



Honda does require they get replaced once removed
Bugger that, they're £6.00 each!

Haha yeah and the next owner will probably be saying the same about me.

So if I flip the wheel and put the spacers in the correct way then the spacing is pretty good. It's also pretty close with the tyre in the correct way but reversing the spacers (but they will be in backwards).

The hex part of some of the screws rounded out when trying to remove the screws. They weren't in particually tight...probably close to the 20nm suggested. One of them even looks like it has a small crack along the head. They just seemed soft. I'll attempt to get them off next time I get a chance and replace them all with new screws.
