California Classifies Second-Hand Smoke a Toxic Risk <http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=9761>
A California agency voted Thursday to classify second-hand tobacco smoke as a "toxic air contaminant," a first-in- the-nation move that could ultimately toughen state regulations against smoking.

One of my neighboring cities has already been working on these issues. Personally I think it's odd at best. I don't smoke, I hate the smell, and just about everything else about it, but you should be able to smoke in open areas.

Now the car thing with Children, I agree 100% with. They don't have the choice to smoke, they're being affected by the actions of their parents, but who's to say that a car is worse then their house. I would think that within a few years of something like this being passed, smoking in your house with children is going to be the next thing they go after.

Yep, that's what it is. The smog is just a mirage, don't worry about it . . .

I grew up in SoCal and to say the second hand smoke even significantly adds to the total amount of airborne pollution already there is a total joke. I liked Mayor Yorty's suggestion about putting huge 120' fans on top of the mountains to blow the crap out to the ocean :rotfl: .

I hear people tell me how much better the smog is recently and yet every time I get off the plane in L.A. it's like a brown/purple blanket over the entire basin. Drive up the grapevine a few miles and pass the "smogline" as you leave L.A., it's sobering at best.

I think this is just more rhetoric to keep people thinking it's getting better and California is pro-active on air pollution.

I think it's a good idea not to allow smoking in public parks, beaches, piers etc. Smokers are some of the biggest polluters around. Keeping the butts off the beach, water and parks is a good idea. How many times have you seen a cigarrette butt disposal container and 100s of the things just thrown on the ground all around it.

I wonder what would happen if a comparative study were made of the air in, say, Riverside and a room with smokers. If the smoggy air compared unfavorably, would the health-conscious officials remove the children to a mountain safe above the danger?

Out here in CA a lot of the brush fires we get are started by people throwing their lit cigarette out they car or truck when driving. Instead of outlawing smoking in cars and such why not just have fire safe cigarettes. I believe N.Y. City has this requirement for cigarettes in the city. Fire safe cigarettes go out if they are not continually toked upon. Which is where most of the second hand smoke comes from anyways.
