Guys I purchased a brand new 2018 SP1 and am having issues which are quite taunting for both a new bike and a HONDA
First after 3K kmthe timing chain tensioner went bad rattling the chain at 5K I literally had to beg the dealership to replace it under warranty and they did not believe that was where the noise was coming from.. Next and most disturbing is a heavy pinging at between 3500 and 4250 rpm, the dealer says they have not had any such complaints and I should change my fuel,, end of conversation. My bikes warranty is up this month end, which they reminded of and I am on my own...
Anyone else have a similar issue or can offer suggestions on my way forward, looks like this is my only hope. Thanks

High John and welcome.

I am extremely active on another Honda forum and can honestly say I have never heard of such problems with the 2017 - 19 model. I have the 2018 SP2 so I fully understand the machine you speak of.

I have always run on 'premium' or high octane ethanol-free fuels. Pinging can derive from sub-standard fuels, but it will also occur as a result of an incorrect timing set up via the ECU.

So far as the cam chain, there is no proper reason for it to be loose, BUT is an easily rectifiable solution.

I would not have much faith in your dealer. I would again ask the chief mechanic to investigate, and if met with a refusal, immediately request to see the dealer principle, AND/OR phone/write to your regional Honda Headquarters.

Sorry that I can not be of greater help.

Thanks for the reply I eventually changed out the cam chain tensioner with a manually adjustable one... its fine now...
However as my bike is a USA model and several others are claiming the same pinging issue it is a real problem Only at 3600-4300 rpm in 2, 3,4 th gears I have decided , as others have , to have the ECU flashed as it seems to be the cure. I am also considering installing a slip on, but am hesitant to get a " check engine " light as the exhaust flapper valve will have to be disconnected, any comments on this ?

I would go to your dealer and fork over the $800 or so for the Honda Protection Plan extended OEM warranty if you don't decide to mod it with a flash or other goodies.

Nigel is the only guy here with a blade newer than 2003, but he's knowledgeable enough to offer advice :devil

They should totally have replaced the CCT under warranty.

further to this and after months and calls and emails they finally agreed to pay me for the defective tensioner and it was many weeks of email before i actually got paid I hace to say this was a painful experience, but now I am back to the pinging issue and apart for ( well do not ride at that RPM !! suggestions ) I am now having the ECU flashed and hope it ends my worries.. I feel this may be my last Honda purchase after 19+ years of riding CBR 1000's

Anyone think a change of exhaust may help, as it may definitely change the powerband ?? OR it may just swallow the pinging noise :)

If you're thinking of changing exhaust, defo do it BEFORE ECU flash, otherwise performance will be up the creek again.:wink
