I've never played with a 1000RR. Looking at the pictures, I wonder...would a 1000RR tank cover go over the 954 tank? Or would the 1000 tank replace the 954 tank without modification, and then be able to use the 1000 tank cover?

Anybody done this, or been able to look at the bikes to see if it could be done? The tank on my 954 is a little buggered, and I'm searching for innovative solutions.

I considered it to do away with the heavy steel tank and use a smaller aluminium tank. The 1000RR and 600RR covers both fit on the 929 quite neatly (without the tank) but I never went ahead with it. Can't tell you whether the 1000/600 fuel tank fits though as I hadn't tried that.
The 929 tank with fuel pump is around 7kg and it's at the top of the bike. Put in another 13kg of fuel and you can see obvious advantages in reducing its weight and/or moving it lower :)

Hey Bladeracer, that's a pretty cool clutch cover you've got in that picture. Who makes it? Where did you get it?

I really can't see how the tank would fit since the 1000 tank goes down under the seat a bit and its only like half the original tank area with the other half being the airbox. it would seem you'd have to replace the tank and airbox and I really have no idea if you can make them both fit. seems like way too much work to make it work, much easier and cheaper to just buy a tank off ebay.

So the 1000rr tank is aluminum? Hmmmmm.....must...not.....go.......there!:idea:

No, the 1000RR tank is not aluminium.
I wanted to make a smaller tank that will fit lower down the bike and use the 1000RR tank cover as the airbox.

I made that myself in about ten minutes :)

sounds like a big job, only way to really tell is to get one and try it. your local bike spares wrecker may lend u one to try if you ask nice...

On a closer look, seems you just bent aluminum & secured it with a couple clutch cover bolts. Hmmm, you're giving me a few ideas :)

What guage of aluminum did you use? Any more pictures?
When they brought in the rules about engine cover protection it didn't specify if covers needed protection only if they protruded out of the engine. Realising how hopelessly the scrutineers understand the existing rulebook I knew there'd be problems with the new rules :)
I'd done the stator cover guard already but at the last minute I decided I wasn't going to drive two hours to the race track only to have an argument about it so I quickly whipped up a guard for the clutch as well.
I made a card pattern (cereal packets are great) first which I then transferred to 5mm plate and cut out with the jigsaw. Put it in the vice and whacked it into shape with a hammer. Then cut some spacers out of 12mm round bar and used longer bolts. It has a piece of vulcanised rubber on the back to insulate it from rubbing on the engine cover. I had planned to improve it and lighten it but never got around to it :)
I put a lot more effort into the stator cover guard but I only ran it for a very short time before removing the stator, rotor and cover and making a new flat stator cover out of 5mm plate so it doesn't need an additional guard.

hmmm. Interesting Bladeracer. I touched down the clutch cover in a lowside a couple weeks ago, and I was trying to figure out how to protect it. Frame sliders took most of the damage, rearsets got smashed up, and my stator cover is a little scraped but intact.

I'd like to get a decent aftermarket stator cover that can take a hit, but it seems my options are limited.

Seems Billet-tech and the el-cheapo YanaShiki are my only choices.

I'm kinda thread jacking here...:crap: :nono:
