Hi,

Im new to the site and as im having to use my phone the search doesn't wanna work so I'll just get to the problem. Occasionally my 1999 cbr600 FX stutters after riding a few miles and then loses power and cuts out. I then have to wait awhile with the choke on full and try turning it over. Sometimes the bike starts again reving at less than 1k rpm and sounds horrid but eventually bursts into life and then can be ridden but feels horrible. Or sometimes she just won't fire up and the battery wil drain with me trying. I just can't work this one out any help will be so much appreciated.

Got a multimeter? Do the regular charging system tests (it's talked about almost every day on here) :)

Hi, How long have u had the FX & has it just started doing it?
Could be fuel starvation - usual suspects are, 1) kinked or blocked fuel tank breather pipe, (if it dies - open tank filler cap), 2) fuel pump contact points (look in back of pump - replacement contacts £20 from Wemoto), 3) dirt in carb jets or filters, check & clean.

I haven't had the bike long and its got good service history from previous owner. Its done a good 70k tho so clocking up the miles. I've checked the hoses and carbs as this was my first guess but all seems ok there. What's these contacts you mention? Thanks for replying.

They are in the back of the fuel pump - take the screw out of the back of the black cap; CAREFULLY pull apart noting that the wires are a tight fit in the cap.
Look at the condition of the 2 contact pads (also known as "point sets") they arc / burn /stick etc giving intermittent problems or total fuel pump failure.
See link below it shows a video of how to get to them & change them - cheaper than a new pump!

Hey guys just an update on the symptoms. As we have had randomly hot weather in the south of the UK. The bike hasn't been stuttering. It does feel like its running horribly but the throttle seems to feel tighter more responsive but when slowing down the engine breaking seems really slow at dropping the revs almost sticking.
