I have a crack in the head of my 98 CBR900RR on the water jacket side where the cam chain follows. the previous owner raced it and obviously never drained the water and it froze..etc.. Does anybody know what material the head made of ? cast aluminum? and has anybody sucessfully had a head welded, thanks

I'm not really qualified to comment from a technical standpoint, but I say what the hell, try it. What's the worst that can happen? You might get a few more thousand miles out of it. Cheaper than a new motor.

I would look for a used one. You can might find a used one for what the welding will cost you.

Its a cast alloy head and yes you can weld them. Take it to an engine shop, or a head specialist and talk to them about it. Its pretty safe to do if done properly. Ive see big horsepower car engines have cracks welded up with no problems.
