Alright so i've gone through alot iwth my bike, have not had it running in months... but we sold our house so i need to get it moving quickly!

Background:
Thought the original sound it was making was CCT, removed it (after alot of work) and installed an APE manual.

Started bike, still there. Adjusted APE Both ways... still there

So I removed the APE, and am reinstalling the automatic that was original, but it's not fitting at all! The bolts can't even get into contact with the thread... it appears to be fully out, and will not compress again...

So do they decompress and get stuck out like that? (thus I will need a new one) or what's going on... any tips on getting it in would be great...

thanks for the reply, but in the picture in the service manual of the 'tool' (on the manual i have online) is soo different than what that post has a picture of. I wouldn't even know how to use that one?

havent seen that tool before either but if ya need one made id be happy to make ya one at work and ship it to ya for nothing, i can do it out of tooling steel or aluminum, im not sure of its exact use though.... lemme know.

Just remove the little screw and insert the tool. Turn it until it will turn no more, and then push it in to lock it in place. Piece of cake. The CCT works by rotating, not by compression. You are turning the spring, thus retracting the end.

Ahh I understand now, I thought you used it to push the chain, and didn't realize it was actully in the CCT itself!

stopsign: if you could make one that'd be great let me know how I can repay you some how!

I used a small flat blade screwdriver to wind mine in.
Of course, if you have limited room once on the bike, that wont really be possible, but at least with it off, you can see how it works.
AS said,
remove the small bolt in the end, and insert a very small flat screwdriver.
turn the driver and you will see the plunger retract.
Once you understand the concept and see it in action, you may well be able to find something else you can use to hold it in.

Yes I do have very limited room working on the bike, I don't think they could have picked a worse spot to put the CCT! The bolt closer to the frame is almost impossible to put on / off. Even a ratcheting wrench (not socket, just the craftsmen ones) can't even fit over it if it's out more than 2 turns!

When i get off from work I'll see if I can get it with a small screw driver.

You may have read that I took my cct off to inspect it. To replace it i made a short screwdriver out of some scrap tin. I used this to turn the recessed screw so that the tensioner retracted. I then lodged the edge of the tin in one of the slots. The tension on the spring loaded screw held the tin in place.

Then remove the timing inspection cover and use a wrench to turn the crankshaft clockwise until the line next to the 'T' mark aligns with little notch in the top of where the timing cover sits.

Now re-install the CCT. Fasten the securing bolts. When it's in position simply pull out the piece of tin. The tensioner arm will spring forward into position. Replace the end cap screw. Replace the timing cover. Job done.

I know this thread is really old, but how did you get that CCT bolt on the frame side screwed in? I can't get a tool to fit around it...its driving me crazy!!!

Maybe replace them with socketheads instead and use a ball-ended allen key?

Thanks bladeracer, I'm going to try one more time tonight to see if I can get the bolt in...if not, I'm going to replace the one bolt with a sockethead like you suggested.
I replace all the fasteners with stainless socketheads the first time I remove them.

I ended up taking bladeracer's advice and installed 2 socket head bolts into the CCT. I also then used the ball-ended allen wrenches to torque it. Thanks a bunch bladeracer for helping me out once again :)
