What chain and sprocket combinations do forum members recommend for a 2000 929? I think I will continue with the 530 chain pitch, but I would like to lighten the drive train without sacrificing longevity.

Suggestions? Anyone...anyone?

The collective experience is that switching to a 520 chain will not reduce longevity, so... a 520 set from DK would be best, IMHO.

go one down on the front and if that is not good enough for you go up on the back one or two teeth

front stock 16
rear stock 43

go to
front 15
rear 44 or 45

that should make you happy and you can keep the stock #530 chain

A quality 520 chain (D.I.D or RK) and quality sprockets won't sacrifice the longevitiy. Take 2OH's suggestion and get the 520 conversion from Dan Kyle

So why did my stock D.I.D chain only last about 12K miles? I clean it regularly and try to make sure it is not too tight, although I'm sure there have been several times when that was true.

Do D.I.D chains stretch more then most? Is there a chain that is known for not stretching?

Actually my sprockets are in great shape. I hate to change them. I don't mind spending the money, I just hate to toss them when they are in such good shape.

Well if your chain is trashed, then you might as well by the whole kit.  Even if your sprockets are in decent condition, it's not that much more to just get it all at once.  (Since you don't mind spending the money )
Better make sure that your sprockets are good if you don't get new ones because if they aren't they'll trash your new chain.

my stockers got 19K on it and still seems to have some stretch left to it even after some heavy-duty dyno tuning... I've been eyeing the 520 Kyle conversion as a winter mod tho...

After checking on several manufacturers websites, they list the 520 chains in their top models as good for 750cc max engine size.

So what gives?

Liability and intended use.

Your 929/954 and its use is not the same as Rossi's. It's true of most everything. A $10,000 set of rotors might be good for one race at the pro level, but will last years on a rather more sedately ridden machine. etc etc etc
